Poll question: Which of these top 10 supposedly haunted places would you most like to visit?
The idea came to me when I thought of Haunting In Connecticut being released tomorrow. I would pick the White House because Obama's there now. Next would be the Whaley House, one of 30 official haunted houses designated by the Commerce Dept. You can choose a write-in for another place if you want.

1. you live not far from there, and you haven't been to Gettysburg?
Edited on Thu Mar-26-09 12:54 PM by tigereye
How did that happen? I always thought it would be interesting to go on one of those ghost tours there.

to be fair, I haven't been either, but it's a little farther for me. I wanted to go but the menfolk here kept balking. I have been to Antietam, though.

PS, I went for the Lighthouse.

3. ever since we read The Killer Angels (amazing book btw)
I have wanted to go. Reading that really brings it home, I think. You can vizualize all the events more easily when you know the motivations and planning of the generals.

15. go! go! go! Can't recommend it enough!!
When my SO and I were even poorer than we are now, we went through a Civil War Battlefield Tour Phase - we're in Phila, so most of them are within a day's drive, and the hotels in those areas (except maybe Richmond) tend to be pretty cheap. We read Killer Angels and saw the Ken Burns series, and decided we had to see the places for ourselves.

Here's my suggestion - go during the off-season so you're not fighting with the tourists, and bring your walking shoes.

Follow each day's events in order - find the tower at the seminary where John Buford first evaluated the lay of the land and realized where the Union needed to be to hold their ground. Walk through town, where Union troops were running ahead with the Confederates in close pursuit.

Walk up and town Little Round Top, visualizing the bullets flying. Be sure to visit the Wheat Field and Devil's Den, thinking about that goofball renegade General Sickles.

Lastly, if you don't do anything else, be sure to walk Pickett's Charge, right up the Angle to where Union General Hancock was shot in the butt (but survived).

Then go get yourself a few drinks and nice, reasonably-priced dinner in town somewhere. And bring the book "The Stars in Their Courses" along with you to read on your trip. It's short - I read it every 4th of July, and I'm a girl, with very little interest in guns or armies or battles, but it's great stuff.

A friend attended college there, and claimed that she saw ghosts when she rode her bike through the battlefield, but she's a little wifty.....

I might share it sometime. I have seen some very real proof of the haunting. Of course, it was only with my lying eyes.

16. Who knows? I like to believe it because I like scary stuff.
In the Discovery Channel version the family refused to show their faces. And at the end, one of the sons said that would be the last time he discussed it. I think they had people backing up some of the stories of things that have happened. And they had an exorcism with a priest and all! It was a funeral home they moved into for Chrissakes. I would NEVER move into a funeral home! Freaky!

I've personally never had a clear experience, other than a feeling in my uncle's old house. The residents that came after him said it was haunted, even though his family had no experiences. The people who live in a house can bring out activity, so it's not impossible that the Conn. story is true. I just remain skeptical on that one.

My mom had a major feeling in the Schifferstadt house in Frederick, MD when I was a kid. Said she didn't feel wanted in a certain room. Not just her - she felt the tour group wasn't wanted. My dad had a weird experience when he was young with a fan suddenly turning on in an old ambulance, and more recently felt a really cold spot in his late father's home.

7. Other: New Orleans
It gets my vote as the most haunted city in the U.S. (although others lay claim to that title). What I love about it (besides the food, atmosphere, history, architecture, people, and everything else) is that it has plenty of haunted places that are home to actual entities instead of "echoes" (and I've already met a couple of them). I would suspect that many of the locations in the poll have more of the latter, as they're sites where traumatic events occurred.

9. I think the prisons might have more echoes indeed
Edited on Thu Mar-26-09 01:08 PM by mvd
I'd say there's a mix overall, because many of the places have specific entities.

New Orleans would be great to visit, though! I wonder if the recent tragedy increased activity.

14. That's a good question
I've wondered that myself. I'd suspect it has, what with such a wrenching tragedy--something like that tends to "keep folks around". The last time I went there was a couple of years before Katrina; Mr. MG is going there in a couple of weeks without me (he's already acknowledged that it's grounds for me to divorce him ;) ) but he's more hit or miss when it comes to picking up on entities, so he won't be able to get a good sense of how the energy has changed there. Damn, I wish I could go too... :(

10. Interesting story about Gettysburg
I was visiting with my dad there and we are in a very quiet spot out by the woods. Suddenly I hear galloping and I see a Union soldier on horseback come out of the woods and cross our path about 100 feet in front of us, out of the blue like that.

99% sure it was just a reinactor on his way to a living history gig, but that 1% still intrigues me.

13. I'm not sure, but I think it was middle afternoon. It was overcast, though.
What makes me think it wasn't a ghost was because it was along Seminary Ridge, which was where the Confederate troops were stationed, so a Union calvary man in that spot wouldn't have made much sense.

17. My SO has slept at Eastern State, and it's inhabited alright
by cats, bats, and rats, and lots of them.

He used to be a guide there, and we spent some time after hours, wandering around. There is always stuff making noise and rustling, and things moving just out of your sight, but it's the real, live, 4-footed and winged creatures that cause most of the stories.

One of his colleagues reported being "chased" by an entity, but I seriously doubt that a truly malevolent ghostly being would stop chasing the guy just because the guy made it to the light of the coke machine.

I spent one of the coldest nights of my life in a cell there, pretending to be an incarcerated madwoman for one of their first Halloween tours.

I've heard of similar chase/stop stories with ghosts - one in Jamestown, VA (grumpy female spirit.) I'm sure ESP is a very creepy place, experiences or not.

21. I see you're a local, mvd!
Have you ever gone to the Halloween thingy at Eastern State? I heard it's fun - again, not so fun when you're one of the ones on the OTHER side of the bars, freezing your ass off in a dank cell.

The other creepy thing is that the place is literally falling apart, and parts of the ceiling can drop on your head any moment. Plus the bats.

Go Phillies :hi:

25. Been to Alcatraz and the Alamo. Not haunted.
Also have spent many a night in Louisville's Sealbach Hotel, also supposedly haunted. No ghosts, goblins, moans (I was by myself), chains dragging, doors moving, apparitions, etc., etc.

Have also toured supposedly haunted places in Key West and New Orleans, with the same results.

"Haunted" is a scam (IMO) to draw business.

It just wasn't haunted.

The hotel in Louisville supposedly had the ghost of a bride haunting it. I even stayed in one of the rooms that the veiled apparition was supposed to have visited on a regular basis.

Nice hotel, comfortable room, great staff...but no ghost. I was disappointed.

28. I went to college in Gettysburg
So I spent a lot of time on the battlefield and it is certianly a very spiritual place, you can't help but to feel connected with the horrible tragedy of 1863. I spent two nights on the battlefield, the first time I swore something ran passed me and yet nothing was there. The second time, a group of us were watching a meteor shower in the middle of the night and one of my friends went off by himself and he heard someone calling out "help me!" Everyone else was accounted for.

it is beautiful, terribly moving, and wonderfully, lovingly presented. The guides know their stuff and take it terribly seriously. We stayed in a B&B very close by (on land technically part of the battle scene, but at the outskirts) and heard a little talk on munitions used in the battle. (Yes, munitions!, Cannonballs.) It was very interesting and I'm a female and a highly unlikely audience for such a talk. You get the impression that the local community is very very serious about preserving it all.

I like scary movies (not ones with a lot of gore). I've seen a program on TV that documented the same story and it was also called Haunting In Connecticut. It seems like it would make a good scary movie although I doubt it actually occurred since I don't believe in ghosts.
