I think I just did a bad thing in the kitchen.
I spent a considerable amount of time this evening cutting, trimming, and breading several pounds of chicken wings. After carefully placing the wings on pans, I managed to get the first pan into the 450 degree oven, but the second pan tilted and most of the wings hit the kitchen floor (old pine planks) before making it to the oven.

My dinner partner and I decided "what the hell", and put the wings back on the pan and they are presently cooking away. Is this totally wrong? Would you cook food that had hit the floor (without washing it first)?

1. Well, there is the five-second rule.
Also, since you're cooking them you'll kill any cooties they might have picked up from the floor. However, if there is cat hair on the floor, like there is on mine, you might want to pick off any that stuck, or you'll get hairballs.

2. How long were they on the floor?

Five second rule and besides - heat will burn anything off anyway. They only thing I'd worry about is animal hair.

12. I froze for about 7 seconds before springing into action.
But ya, probably cat hair. Damn cats!

22. Since I have five cats, I kinda feel
used to having the odd cat hair in almost any dish. I wouldn't think twice about it.

24. Adds fiber to the diet.
At least that is what I tell myself when I find a couple floating on top of my coffee in the morning...

Fiber is a good thing--right?

3. I think 450 degrees will kill any germies.
I'd be more nervous about the salmonella already in the chicken than the germs it picked up on your floor.

4. I would have rinsed them off, then wiped the floor with
my green cleaner, but continued cooking. Don't worry about it.

6. Sounds like the two of you agree that it's ok.
I wouldn't do that with a guest but if you both agree then no problem.
The 450 degrees will kill anything harmful.

7. It depends on how clean your floor is
I wouldn't worry about germs, the oven will take care of that, but I would worry about and macroscopic particles on the floor getting on your food (stray hairs, crumbs, etc).

10. snort
Hi,
I noticed that too! I agree with most posters. I would be more worried about cat hair
or something physically on the floor getting attached to the wings than germs which will
be backed off.

Peace

14. If I dropped lutefisk on the floor it would dissolve into the wood, so there would be no dilemma..nt

17. Yes, fish cured in lye is far more suspect than chicken hitting the floor before cooking.

15. Yeah--as long as your floor isn't just nasty.
The heat would kill most germs anyway!

16. I'd never do that. Cook chicken wings, I mean.
Vegetarian. I'd scoop anything that didn't splatter and run under the stuff up and cook it, though. Like worse hasn't happened already at the packing plant.

19. I would do that, although I inspect them carefully as I picked them up to
ensure that there weren't any wierd cling-ons. And I'd make certain that they got up to temperature and cooked fully.

Finally, I'd give the floor a good bleach-wiping, or whatever is appropriate for pine...

Have a good dinner!

23. To have a mature and strong immune system you need to eat a little dirt and
a few bugs. It is especially important that kids are exposed to dirt. But I bet it would be good for you too.
