Crabs 'give pain you can remember' suggests new study

(XTNN) -- New research suggests that crabs not only make you suffer pain but that you will retain a memory of it.

The study, which was carried out by Professor Dick Woody and Candice (candy) Apple from the School of Applied Biological Interactions at University of Queen's, New York, looked at the reactions of School faculty crab infestations. It was published in the journal "Worm Runner's Digest."

Professor Woody, whose previous work showed that oysters increase the frequency of biological interactions, said his research highlighted the need to investigate quick treatment for infestations of these tiny crustaceans.

Blue crabs in particular are cranky little bastards. And I have shaken hands with a number of them.

2. I put them in iced water before handling

that makes them nice and torpid.

I tried that with Dungeness crabs and nearly lost a finger; they are cold water crabs, so the iced water didn't slow them down one bit.
