BRIDGETON, N.J. — Just when it seemed that all the sports-licensing ideas had been exhausted — coffins with team logos, unveiled a few years ago, could have reasonably been the presumed end — along comes something that has been growing in plain sight all along.

Yankees Sod.

A tuft for the windowsill? A pallet for the backyard? Officially licensed grass is about to be sold, in the form of sod or seeds, to fans who want a patch to call their own.

“It’s just capitalizing on what we have and what we’ve done,” said Rick DeLea, vice president of DeLea Sod Farms, which his grandfather founded in 1928 and has supplied turf for Yankee Stadium since the 1960s.

May you finish in last place again this year, Yankoffs.

1. I don't like the Yankees because I'm from Ohio
and I grew up in a family full of Reds fans.

I get that

but this has nothing to do with them......

just some guy growing the grass for the new stadium and
using it as a selling tool.....

3. I agree.
Why hate on the Yankees because they're allowing the guy who supplies sod to the stadium to also brand and sell that same proprietary sod blend to the general public?

There are legitimate reasons that one might want to buy that...beyond the obvious sports-branding, the stuff is beautiful, feels like velvet on your feet and it'll obviously take a beating without wilting or going to crap if they can play 170+ games a year on it, including pre-season, post-season and novelty(ie. Old-Timer's Day) games on it. If you've got the dough, I hear it's a great sod for anybody who wants have a great lawn that isn't high maintenance and has kids. (I've been onto the field at "Old" Yankee Stadium. If I had a lawn, I'd want that grass.)

I hate the Yankees too, but let's be honest, my beloved Red Sox would do the same thing...and so would any other franchise in a grass-field sport.
