1. Guiness. If I was wealthy, I'd probably drink nothing else.
The Duck-Rabbit "Milk Stout" would be a strong runner-up.

Some of the darker "Brooklyn" varieties are very good.
They'd probably be in my "10-way tie for 2nd place" list.

22. You say "bog water" like it's a bad thing.
Did you know that if you seal a fresh fish fillet into tupperware
filled with water drawn from a peat bog, it will stay edible
for MONTHS at room temperature? It's a fact. Google it sometime.

And the "soap" thing is just a urban legend, based on the fact
that Guiness employees (unlike those dirty Limbaugh fans at Coors)
wash their hands before exiting the restrooms.

I am currently drinking Bells Two Hearted Ale. If you like hops, this is the beer for you. You will notice the aroma of grapefruit.

The writer at just beer was already snockered, so he probably couldn't really taste it.

If you live in the west, San Diego's Stone Brewery makes some good brews. Stone Pale Ale is not shabby at all.

13. It's hard to nail down a "favorite". It depends on what time of year...
What I'm serving it with, etc. In the winter I tend to gravitate towards dark and heavy beers like Murphy's Irish Stout. In the hot Texas summers I like a filtered weizen like Bischofshof Kristall. For meals like steak I like an American amber.

24. How can one have a single favorite beer?
I'm a fan of pale ales, and there are a lot of good ones out there, most notably Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Lake Effect Pale Ale from the Pearl Street Brewery. I also enjoy stouts occasionally, especially Guinness on draft or, if I feel like something really heavy, a Young's Oatmeal Stout. Most days, if I'm just stopping for a beer or two, I'll have a Yuengling Lager on draft, or if I'm buying beer by the case to fill the fridge, it's Yuengling Lord Chesterfield Ale.

Irish Ale are my favorites right now. Schlafly dry hopped APA is nice and smooth. Bells Oberon is a smooth Wheat Ale. Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout always pleases Mackeon's Triple XXX stout, is excellent. It's a very smooth milk stout. Stone Pale Ale is a tasty offering out of Stone.

Dogfish Head makes some nice brews. Pricey

For you Rye Drinkers. Jim Beam Rye is pretty good. It's an easier drink than the 101 proof out of Wild Turkey. Both excellent and relatively inexpensive. Old Overholt is a no nonsense Rye. It's good too. Can't go wrong with any of the above.

94. They gave me terrible headaches. I found them unpleasant. I was
always more of a weed man. Now I'm on SSI and can't afford such luxuries. A shot of whiskey relaxes me, takes my mind off it. I also believe that endurance sports in my past has helped me manage pain. You learn what you can handle. That might have been the key to Lance Armstrong's success. He learned his real pain threshold over and above what he had experienced in his pre cancer career. He went in knowing he could endure pain, and he came out knowing that he can endure a lot more. Climbing the Alps and everyone is in pain. The most gifted are wilting from the pain, but the person who knows he can prevail wins.

97. that's too bad, as they've really done wonders for me...
i take methadone in 10mg tabs, 5-7/day so it's easy to adjust the dosage to suit the pain.

my condition(didn't you say you had spondylitis as well?) went un/mis-diagnosed for over 10 years, while i attributed the pain to the construction work, and self-medicated with weed. not know what condition i had, i left the union trades for a desk job- which, ironically was probably as bad or worse for my back than concrete work. but by the time i DID get a correct diagnosis- i was sol as far as my union disability benefits- which i would have been able to get had i not been given a mis-diagnosis about my condition in the previous years.

as the pain worsened(at the desk job, prior to a valid diagnosis), i continued medicating with weed and scotch, and the occasional ibuprofen. but as my condition is one that tends to progress/worsen fairly slowly- especially in the beginning, so does the pain- which makes you sort of like the frog put into a pot of water that's slowly brought to a boil, in that you don't really notice how bad it's getting, as you tend to adjust to each increment. but it does really wear on your mood, disposition, and outlook in general.

once i got a proper diagnosis, and some proper pain meds(oxycontin, for starters)- it amazed me just how big a difference it made, and like i had said earlier- it made me realize just how much pain i had really been in without them.(although it had still hurt a lot).

i gave up on 'winning' a long time ago- now i just want to enjoy the ride as much as i can, and get to the finish line with/in as little discomfort as possible.

103. It's been nearly ten years for me. I lucked out
because I had a real good neurosurgeon diagnose me. I then went to another neurosurgeon that just happened to be a big rival of the first. He agreed to the first diagnosis. That helped my disability case because those two surgeons rarely agree. A good friend is a physical therapist, my family doctor is a disgruntled "company doctor." He helped me negotiate the disability claim minefield. I was sitting pretty. My union helped me with paperwork and kept me informed of my rights under the contract and federal law.

104. i think that this is my 11th year since my finding of disability...
i was approved in 1998, on my second try. i tried to go it alone the first time, and got denied. i didn't have insurance, so neurosurgeons would have been out of the question. i went with a lawyer who specializes in disability cases- he used to work for the ssa. iirc- the cost was 25% of my first year and retroactive award(?- i honestly don't recall- i remember thinking that it was a LOT- but also it was worth missing the aggravation/frustration that would have ensued had i had to face another denial letter.) the day i got the award letter was one of the happiest days/feelings that i had had in many years prior.

however- i did get another bit of aggravation from 'the system'. when i went to the ssa to discuss my benefit amount- i discovered that a construction company that i had worked for for a couple years almost 20 years prior hadn't paid into fica what they had deducted from my paycheck over those years. and because my working years were cut so short- it represented over 12% of my earned/benefit wages. and by that time, they were long-since gone and bankrupt...and i had ZERO recourse. as a result, my monthly benefit check is that much shorter than it should be, let alone the lost disability from leaving the union early due to mis-diagnosis of my condition.

sometimes i can get very bitter about the whole deal, and life in general.

but it tends to pass.

105. Had a boss do that to me with insurance. I ended up taking away his
business. Didn't get mad, I got even.

I think my years as a retail salesman helped me. To sell any product you first have to sell yourself. The product was my injury.

Actually, I have yet to find a truly bad beer from any microbrewery on the West Coast, but I'll always come back to Obsidian Stout.

61. I've been drinking lots of white ales lately.
Allagash, Blue Moon, Hoegaarden, Sam Adams. Don't know if they're my favorite beers of all time, but I've been liking them a lot lately.

Two of the very best beers I've ever had:

Radegast, a Czech pilsner that was dirt cheap in the early 1990s, but which I haven't seen at all since.

Warsteiner, the German king of beers.

I honestly can't choose just one

Right now I'm drinking Mikkeller Beer Geek Brunch Weasel. It's an Imperial Stout brewed with Civet Coffee. Weasel poop or no weasel poop, this is one mighty fine beer!

But yesterday when I had a Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale, I loved it too!
