A Plea for Help, Really Bad Times Have Hit Me and my Family
Edited on Mon Mar-30-09 01:43 PM by TexasLady
Firstly, I need to post the following from Skinner:

Required disclaimer: The administrators of Democratic Underground have
given permission for one discussion thread on this topic. The
administrators of Democratic Underground make no claims regarding the
legitimacy or illegitimacy of this fundraising effort. Permission was
granted by Skinner on 3/30/09, and the moderators have been notified.

Here goes:

Around the end of Jan. and the first two weeks of Feb., I was in awful pain in my left calf. Four visits to the ER, and each doctor kept saying it was sciatic nerve. On the 13th of Feb, the pain was so awful, I would rather choose giving birth to having that kind of torture. Apparently, it was because there was NO blood going to my leg. My foot went cold and numb and purple. On Valentine's Day, I had surgery to try and save my left leg, because I had several blood clots in my
artery in my thigh. After three awful surgeries and more than one week later,
I lost my leg on Feb. 22. I recovered for about 2 1/2 more weeks before being sent home.

The problem is that my income of course, became zero, and my husband's dropped significantly time I was in the hospital as well as recovering. I am at a loss, because we are on the verge of losing our home now. A friend was going to do
a benefit for us, but apparently it isn't happening. I don't know what else
to do, except to see if there is ANY way I can ask for help here at DU. I don't even know how to go about it, exactly. So far I have emailed Skinner, and another good friend here. I can absolutely show that these things have happened, if anyone needs to see that. I have been here at DU for a good while now, and have met many great people here, and many more I would love to meet!

The mortgage is behind about 2400 dollars, thanks to late fees, insurance, and being behind about 3 months. We can't even finish the ramp up to the house, because we are trying to save our money to try and send something to the mortgage folks. My husband still has to help me up and down the ramp until we can afford the concrete leading to the car. It's gravel, and a pain to maneuver through with a wheelchair.

I have three kids still at home, and I am just really scared of losing our home. There are a few smaller bills but so far we have managed to hold them off.

Im more than happy to answer any questions, just send them to me in a DU pm.

(I have no idea if I am allowed to post anywhere else on the forum, because I forgot to ask.)

3. If you're in a good-sized town,
I would suggest having someone call the local carpenters union on your behalf and see if they'll build the ramp as a volunteer project. They do that all the time up here (in MN).

5. I'm not sure I can help
I've just tapped out every last friend and relative I have to pay April's rent and utilities. But I'll happily keep this kicked for you.

Any chance you could get unemployment/disability? I've just applied for Social Security myself. It isn't much, but every bit helps.

7. First of all, terribly sorry for all you have gone through, and the loss of your leg.
(FYI, while it's probably not high on your list of priorities now, you may have a malpractice case re: initial "diagnosis" of sciatica--you might want to look into legal action when you're feeling more secure.)

I have no spare income to give, but I will gladly send all the positive energy I can your way.

I'm so sorry about your leg and your loss of income. Have you gotten legal advice on your home? If not, please do so right away, before anything falls further behind. I'll see what I can do to help. Hopefully, you and your family will find the assistance you need to get through this awful time. I'm so sorry you are suffering... 35. You are in my thoughts
I cannot donate any money at the moment to get you over the hump but you are in good hands here on DU. There are wonderful people here that are on your side.

During your 2.5 week recovery time you may have met a counsler/therapist/nurse that you became familiar with and became friendly. These folks see situations so often that they may be a source of good information on how to make all the transitions needed to get you back on track. Reach for them when you can.

Hopefully someone already has began all the paperwork to set you up on disability. Once you get all the paperwork settled and begin recieving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) you will get a retroactive payment dated to when you first became in need. Well, that's how it was in '94. I just suggest that if you aren't aware of the status of the paperwork that you find out and stay on top of it.

Stay strong and pro-active until you get all things in order.

I love you.

45. Yup
I love seeing everyone here band TOGETHER to tackle serious stuff. It makes me feel better about humans hehe.

It goes faster if the paperwork is followed up by the hospital, rehab, etc.

A gone leg is actually easier for them to get authorized. (If that makes sense) If you have outpatient therapy use them too. Oh! request massages from hunks hehe. Remember, it is about you when you are there. Milk the staff for all they have in their brains to make your new ways of doing things suit you. It's not all about the money. It's about you.

It doesn't take long when faced with a sudden loss of income, particularly in this economy. It took me three years to use up everything I'd saved for over thirty.

I'm too much of a lady to tell you what I think of your advice to those of us who've fallen on hard times through no fault of their own.

If compassion is beyond you, then at least consider learning a few manners.

This kind of thinking is beyond me. I have met people that honestly think people without health insurance choose it and could find a way to pay if they really wanted to. It the same line of thinking. Some people just don't get it.

141. yeah, right. all you need to do is...
I saved 10% of my income for a decade. And then 50% of my income for another 7 years. My emergency fund, which once ran into the 6 figures, is now almost completely tapped out due to one emergency on top of another. The biggest being years of unemployment thanks to the * economy.

Otherwise I'd be sending a donation. Instead, all I really can afford is  and prayers and blessings for you, Texas Lady.

112. when you grow up
and you move out on your own, I'm sure you'll find out things aren't so cut and dried out in the real world. A so called "emergency fund" can be eaten up in the blink of an eye when faced with real world situations, especially dire medical problems. Not everyone is a millionaire. :eyes:

117. I have one and it's being used to pay the mortgage. My husband has been
unemployed for five months, is ill and can't work. We have no insurance and he has applied for permanent disability, but that takes awhile and no guarantee that he will be approved without fighting for months. We might lose our home, after we have exhausted our 'emergency fund'. No need for a lecture from you or anyone. x(

123. Hard to do if you are living had to mouth as too many people are doing
the middle class has been decimated. The MSM would have us believe that we are so over extended because of our profligate ways; however, health care costs and other vital essentials have gone through the roof while salaries have remained stagnant or actually decreased in buying power.

Texaslady's family may have had such a fund but it goes very quickly when something like her medical crisis occurs.

Also, many people had their money in 401ks and the like and have very little cushion now to draw from.

have an emergency fund, because the local 'social services' folks will deem it an excessive asset and discontinue benefits. Benefits gone. Emergency fund gone in a few weeks, spent trying to replace those lost benefits.

it'd be called social security, paid sick/carers leave, disability pension and national health. I refuse to call the US a developed country anymore, when a relatively common ailment and a short time off work can do this to people.

A nation should be judged on how it treats those at the bottom of the pile and those in need, whilst there's obviously a large number of thoroughly decent Americans, your nation's priorities fucking suck.

Will chuck some $AUS in next payday

40. Perhaps you could contact your local trade unions
to see if they could be of assistance in building the ramp.

I'm very sorry about your situation. Have you contacted all the appropriate agencies? What did the mortgage company say about your situation? If they are unwilling to help, contact your local paper. It would be a good Snidley Whiplash story and maybe you'll be able to leverage the help you need.

You didn't say how old the kids are, but what about food stamps? Are you filing for disability? I'm sure it seems overwhelming. Is there a social services agency or social worker at the hospital that can help you navigate the situation?

Sorry, but advice and good wishes are all that I can offer for now.

The kids still at home are 10, 16 and 19. The 19 yr old is working part time, and of course the other two are in school.

Social workers at the hospital are fabulous, as the whole staff there is. My pain and other meds are free for now.
Mortgage folks are getting demanding, (Greentree) and of course want their money.
Thank you for your good wishes

47. Your local Center for Independent Living may be able to give you some guidance
now that you've acquired a disability. Centers (I work in one) won't be much help with the finances, but might be able to guide you through the benefits process, and maybe find some group that does make emergency grants. There are over a dozen CILs serving different parts of the Lone Star State. Find yours here:

http://www.ilru.org/html/publications/directory/texas.html

Also, four doctors misdiagnosed you that badly?! Maybe you should see an attorney and figure out which of them to sue.

63. Best wishes from way up north - I've been on Social Assistance for most of the last ten years
.
.
.

Best Wishes again from Northern Ontario.

Having dealt with "poor"(me) for over a decade I think I may be able to offer some advice - no - no money though

Utilize any food bank programs available - don't feel guilty about depriving others - most food banks have limits on what each person can receive anyways

DON'T THROW ANY FOOD AWAY - leftovers can be embellished with a new veggie, can of something or a bit of meat . . crock-pots are GREAT for recycling what many would just throw in the garbage.

Check local churches/sisters of charity(nuns) groups for extra support

I had a problem with transportation for a necessary medical treatment a few years back and the Sisters gave me the money - no repayment required.

Keep asking everywhere you can think of

And kudos the the DUers here that have already helped you out

Best wishes for you and yours,

from Canada

95. A bit off topic, but
I hope you will contact your local bar association and find out who in your area specializes in medical malpractice and/or medical negligence matters. Your case, as tragic as it is, needs to be looked at by an experienced attorney who may or may not be able to help you.

I am so sorry for your travails right now. I'm glad you came to DU. This is a good, kind place.

But, call the bar association and then call whomever they recommend. Get as many names as you can, and make sure you like the person you might end up retaining. And, don't worry - this won't cost you a thing. They'll work on a contingency basis.

Good luck................

177. I agree about the attorney, but you don't need a pro bono attorney for a case
like this. In a medical malpractice case, a good attorney will usually agree to fund the case for you, then split the award at the end.

I'm very sad AND disgusted that this happened to you. Were they checking your blood flow in your leg when you went to the E.R.? What kind of exams, tests did they do in the earlier visits? As someone who has gone through serious blood clots in my leg more than once, I can't imagine how they could mistake this for sciatica -- IF they used ultrasound to check the blood flow in your leg.

Since you live in Texas, you congress person may be a RW ideologue, but it is worth a try. Try both the local office and the DC office.

They were so scared during this whole thing, not knowing how it would all turn out, while I was doped up on morphine for almost two weeks. I barely remember anything until I was headed for the rehab floor.

I will certainly keep yall updated on things. I want to send pics of the finished ramp with me on it soon!

community.wishadoo.net

You can just copy and paste and put it in the "critical needs" category of the discussion forum. A few DUers are already there as well, and this is what Wishadoo was created for...to reach out and help one another.

We're just getting started, so I'll be thinking of a few more ways maybe to help, but posting there is a good start, in addition to your DU home, of course. :)

You'll need to register first to post.

I send you more supportive hugs than you can imagine, and will do what I can to help, as I know others here will as well.

I'm OneVoice there, the site creator.

You are a brave soul.

169. there is so much more going on here than a looming financial disaster
TexasLady also has to deal with some very serious medical issues. The problem she describes sounds like an arterial thrombosis, where clots form in the arteries. (Most cases of blood clots we hear about occur in veins.) The clots blocked oxygen-rich blood from the heart/lungs from getting into the leg tissue, and the leg tissue became starved and started to die, which led to the amputation. It is outrageous that so many doctors missed this diagnosis, absolutely unbelievable, and if there was ever a good case for medical malpractice, TexasLady's case is it!

If you can afford to help her out financially, please try. She has some really tough medical issues to deal with, and does not need the distraction of worrying about losing her home. Doctors have to figure out what caused the clots because it could happen again if she gets off blood-thinners. She will need specialized physical therapy to deal with the phantom limb pain. She will need help dealing with the emotional trauma of this nightmare.

This is absolutely unbelievable ... outrageous.

It really explains the medical issues I am dealing with. Im 45, which is apparently a really young age to have this condition according to what my docs all told me...the ones that got my diagnosis right...I had to have both vascular and ortho docs through all this.

Anyways, you described what Im dealing with so well, and I also want to thank you for your emails.

239. i cannot understand why this was not diagnosed earlier
those doctors must be super-incompetent. There should have been some signs to clue them in about what was going on.

For instance, if a clot was blocking blood from feeding the leg tissue, areas of the leg with starved tissue would have felt cold to the touch. There would have been a weak or undetectable pulse. The lack of blood movement should have been obvious in an ultrasound. The fact that they dismissed it as sciatic nerve pain simply boggles the mind.

I'm not a doctor, nor do i consider myself a particularly smart person. But i was forced to learn about blood coagulation issues because i had a similar medical crisis. In my case, the clot formed in a vein and my leg swelled up. My doctor's partner saw me and immediately ordered me to an emergency room and he called them to make sure i got immediate attention. I was damned lucky. My doctor and her partner are excellent doctors. I'm lucky to live in a city that has two major medical schools and a world-class medical research facility (but believe me, despite all that, we still have a few dumb doctors in the area!). I also have a research tool that has changed the way we seek information: google.

I was really really lucky. If i had not been diagnosed so quickly, a piece of that clot could have lodged loose, traveled to my heart or lungs with possibly fatal results.

I am also very lucky because i have a job and good medical insurance. I did not have to worry about money and becoming homeless. To have to deal with a financial crisis in the midst of such a serious medical nightmare is utterly utterly HORRIBLE. There is something seriously screwed-up about a country that allows her citizens to suffer like this. Where is TexasLady's safety net???!

My medical crisis forced me to learn about blood coagulation issues, more than i ever wanted to know. Unfortunately, TexasLady will become an expert in this issue in the next few months as she does the research to understand what happened to her. And she will feel very angry about all the warning signs that were missed by those earlier doctors.

There are some excellent support groups for just about every medical condition that's out there. I found an excellent online support group for my condition, Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome. While i was there, i made contact with another DU'er with the same condition and we keep in touch via email to support each other.

Thanks, TexasLady, for telling us what happened to you. Someone reading your OP may someday have the same symptoms. Thanks to you, he or she will recognize the problem and immediately get the right medical care. You will have saved that person's limb, perhaps even his or her life.

174. TexasLady
My prayers are with you. I have been down that road and my disability was approved in Dec. 08 and as far as any back money it went to payoff what loans I had from family and friends (and I found out who my real friends were, not just when I swallowed my pride to ask, but when I went to repay them.)

I sent a little amount but my taxes are overdue, my life insurances is past due, car plates due,... but I don't have to worry about a roof over my head. I'll get by, as my late mother used to say things will straighten out by the time your 100. Well I'm over 60% of the way there and I guess I've got 60% of my life straightened out.

Hang In There and keep us informed

I, for one, would be happy to write a letter to the CEO of Greentree to advise him of the fact that he is about to own this unfortunate PR disaster for the firm.

I'm sure that others here would also write courteous letters telling of their indignation and shock that Greentree could foreclose on someone in your situation.

181. This is one of those times where I wish we could do a "proper fundraiser".
This is about as close as we're going to get on DU, as DU needs donations itself just to exist and pay the server bills plus the admin's wages - they made this site their job too.

TexasLady, I just hope that 100 people will pitch in and donate $25 apiece. That may get the mortgage bastards off your back at the very least. I know others upthread have donated so that number of people donating $25 apiece will have dropped and I know it's dropped again (check paypal.com).

That other thread up-post saying everyone should have an emergency fund - I didn't want to dignify that poster with a direct response... in your case it's what's happened when the emergency fund HAS ran out and all the other emergency cash has been tapped.

I wish you all the best with your medical situation. Obviously 2009 is your personal Annus Horriblis (to borrow the words from Lizzie Windsor).

I don't know what the financial situation for your family is going to be like in the long run. I hate to play the devil's advocate at this point and please don't take this as coming off the wrong way. To keep it simple: plan for the worst and hope for the best. Consider filing Chapter 7, plan on losing the home but fight to keep it. The mortgage company may be a bastard but consider calling them daily so they don't call you (fair debt collection practices act generally forbids them calling you if you've made contact with them recently). I wish they'd hurry up with the social security disability claim situation too - once that goes through then it should open up things like Medicaid (maybe) and Section 8 (if it comes to it).

I'm glad you've reached out, and I wish you all the best. At the end of it, you have something more valuable than any house or bills or things: your family. I admire you for fighting for them.

Regards, Mark.

thank you Mark. We are weighing options about the future. The good news is that DARS as well as a new prosthetic leg, etc will hopefully open new doors for me. My hope is that 2009 will turn into Annus Fantasticus from here on out!

It's not much but maybe it can help. Another DUer posted it a while back. You can get a box of food for $30.00 that will feed a family of four for a week. It may help stretch the money you have.

you sure don't have the sea! I didn't know that about yalls lakes, either.
Also, we have gone up I35 and have twice seen the results of tornadoes in or around OKC. But I35 did have one really scenic spot between the border of TX and OKC that was stunning!

And once we drove thru OKC and there was a billboard, I swear, that said in huge bold letters...'I Farted.' :D

283. Hmm, it was probably the...
Wichita Mountains. It is a beautiful wilderness preserve, with buffalo and other animals all over the place. My husband rides his road bike down there.
We're not originally from Oklahoma, so the novelty of tornados has not worn off on my husband yet. Nothing like a looney Jersey boy running off to the top of the OU's parking deck to check out the weather.

At least you didn't see the abortion billboards. Well, living in Texas, you may have. They're the worst.
Chin up and I hope you are having brighter days :)

Hubby is disabled and I remember what it was like when it medically hit the fan.

I was thinking, since Easter is coming shortly, I would be happy to ask my son if he has an video games he could send to your kids. Also my daughter has a part time job at ToysRus and might be able to pick up some stuff for the kids at quite the discount. If this is something that would be helpful, you can PM me your address.

I just has a fund raiser on DU several months ago because my pet doggie has cancer. With the assistance of so many good people she got the surgery she needed. I hope you the same success. Try to take care of yourself and let me know if I can help.

Small donation - big wishes for your recovery.

I know that you have applied for SSI, but when you get denied - and you will - get yourself an SSI attorney right away. It worked for my partner who was denied. From our experience and have heard from others, it speeds up the process tremendously.

Keep the strength knowing that there are people who care about you.

and no back pain. I remember angering the first doctor (that all the other docs must have blindly followed on diagnosis) because I joked about his youthful looks to him. Guess he couldn't take a joke? ( a nurse came in later when the doctor left and said 'dont sweat it honey, we ALL call him Doogie Howswer) He said, what's the matter, did you think it was a clot of something? trust me, if it was I wouldnt be sending you home.'

well HAHA Doogie.

257. We have enough to cover the overdue mortgage now, and even a little towards the ramp!
I don't think that the ramp will be much more, either. My husband told me that you buy concrete by the yard, and that the gravel spot where my car sits needs to be on concrete as well (the joys of country livin'!) He said about 400-500 should finish the ramp nicely, and we are then going to be okay. Im so happy and SO relieved that this is all really happening!

There is much compassion on this site. I know, because before Christmas I vented in GD about my mom's breast cancer with tears in my eyes, but went to bed with a smile on my face after reading the replies. DU'ers made it all better with their kind words.

Much good luck to you. I'm glad you're able to smile.

The account is under a secure connection.

To the best of my knowledge, Paypal account information has never been compromised, but someone may be able to speak up on this better than me.

Paypal has been around a long time and is used for ebay, etc.

Note: You can use your checking account also.

273. Paypal is an online banking source, the largest.
They have been around for years (I have had my account since 1999) and have proven to be secure. They are owned by eBay now. Used correctly paypal can give you quite good security for online purchases. Many online merchants accept paypal payments. If you can limit the number of online sources with your banking info/cc numbers you are more secure. You pay for goods by transferring through the paypal account. The only thing the online merchant gets is payment and your email address. Paypal also has Master Card debt cards available. I use mine for online purchases which do not accept paypal directly. I transfer enough money from my bank account into my paypal account to cover the purchase, then pay with the debt card. This way I never have any money available if I were to get scammed by an online merchant. Again the only online company who has any of my cc card or bank info is paypal.

274. My dear lady...about disability income..
Mr. D. got on Soc. Sec. disability, he was qualified, no doubt, and you are qualified, no doubt,
His application went smoothly, it took 13 months with everything going right.
Huge back settlement, tho.

I say that to give you some idea of expectations. It may be less time for you since you have all the medical records available, while we had to wait to see one of their docs.

We live in a small rural Ala. town, so the "bureaucracy" was much nicer than in a big city.

I will pm you.

Only asking for help to help out and you can't get an answer. I'm sorry no one stepped up. I think that all the people who actually knew how to use that PayPal thing had come and gone by the time you got lost in the not-so-self-evident. I had to open and cancel and open an account again before I could get it to do what everyone said was so simple.

Members, non Members, from different countries, lurkers, and anyone else out there that has sent donations, prayers, good thoughts, and hugs..There are a few that wanted to send to me snailmail, and that will help with the smaller things that need to be caught up.

I am SOOO happy! I can't believe how many people came to help me and my family when we needed it! May each and every person involved be blessed, get wonderful karma, get help when you need it too, and ask that when I can, I too can pay it forward.

I am one lucky lady, and I want to give out this to every single person that swung by to read this, and then showered us with love, and gifts of all kinds.....:grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:
