That is how full screen bastardizes a widescreen picture. The widescreen ratio is the STANDARD ASPECT RATIO of all movies. All the new TVs built today are widescreen, specifically for viewing those types of movies.

The black bars on widescreen TVs are either eliminated or minimal, but even when you see black bars on your old-school TV, you're still seeing the whole picture as it was filmed.

Imagine reading a book exactly as the author wrote it -- that's widescreen.

Now imagine the same book, but with the beginning and end of every line cut off, depriving you of the creator's intended story -- that's full screen.

I don't know why people keep saying full screen is better when it doesn't even give you the whole picture.

EDIT: Pre-widescreen movies (generally before the mid-1950s) are fine because WS didn't exist then, and the full frame is the entire picture in those cases.
