good bye, Guilding Light
CBS announced Wednesday the cancellation of the longest-running scripted program in broadcasting history, the soap opera “Guiding Light.” The show has been on radio and television for 72 years, beginning on NBC radio in 1937 and moving to CBS television in 1952.

The show’s run will end with an episode Sept. 18.

I must admit, for a 13 year stretch (1983 - 1996), I was addicted to the show. I began watching it with my mother when I came home from school each afternoon. I'd sit through it because Star Trek reruns came on afterwards. Then when I began working nights and overnights in radio, the soap would be on at about the time I got up each afternoon (3PM)

I finally broke the addiction when a long work commute limited my time to watch the video-taped episode.

Yeah, I'm a guy that watched a soap! Prepared me for politics!

When I first started watching:

And today...

1. It was a show that spanned TV history.
I will be sad to see it go. I watched it from time to time. Young and Restless is my fave though.

Goodbye to the Light.

2. Sad!! I never watched. When I did watch soaps, it was Y&R
(aka Victor Sperm as we called it), All My Children, and Days of Our Lives.

3. There is a bright side
NO MORE REVA!!!

I have never hated a character more than I have hated Reva Shane. I started watching GL back in high school, & off & on after that.

Sad to see it's going though. :(

6. Used to watch it with my Mom wayyyy back in the late '50s.
I don't remember much about it except the corny intro.

9. I just started watching that again.
I grew up watching that show. I saw that reunion of the Four Musketeers, since it was just last week. Heh. You can really tell it's on its last legs though. Seems like they ran out of money for sets.

10. I used to watch this show with my Grandma!
 I remember when it was only 15 minutes long. It shared a half hour with "Search For Tomorrow." Watched it off and on until about 8 years ago.
Gosh, what memories, what characters: Bert Bauer, Roger Thorpe (played by the late, great Michael Zaslow), Lujack & Beth, Nola & Quint and their great gothic storyline, and yes, REVA SHANE LEWIS!
Shit, I feel really bad!

12. Oh my gosh...that brings back memories.
My mom always watched it...I remember the Bauer family also, but had forgotten all about the 15-minute thing. I'll have to call Mom tomorrow to reminisce.
