So my neighbor got her toddler's lip pierced.
I cannot believe this. Her freakazoid cousin peirced her baby's lip with a little ring. It's "adjustable" so that when the kid's face gets bigger, the hoop can expand. Then when she's about six, they'll put a bigger one on, and so on...

Why do people try to impose their personality disorders on their own kids?

It's worse than a bowl cut!

1. I think a bowl cut is worse.
My kids can't have any piercings until they can take care of them themselves.

2. Sounds like child abuse
unless it's rooted in the culture. So long as there's no infection, we might consider it to be ok.

90. Circumcision, hell - I call it genital mutilation
Guys can usually get through life just fine with circumcision. What they do to little girls, on the other hand, is truly barbaric.

God bless the docs who volunteer their time and services to undo the damage caused by genital mutilation.

Perhaps I should have used that terminology, as it would have helped to make my point re: the comment about 'sounds like child abuse unless it's rooted in the culture.'

I'm fine with respecting the cultural traditions of others, but only up to a point. When those cultural traditions amount to child abuse, torture et.al. I suddenly become very intolerant.

And with toddlers being really messy eaters and always pulling on things, it may not be such a wise decision.

I don't agree with the decision to pierce the lip (or any other body part on a child of that age), but it just could be ONE foolish decision. But I'll wait until I hear from the OP before passing judgment.

Edited on Wed Apr-01-09 10:28 PM by Withywindle
To the point where my grandfather was offended when she didn't have it done on me. I had it done when I was 10, but at that point I was too big to wear the eeeeeensy pure-gold-and-diamond infant studs he'd sent us, that are still sitting in a bank vault somewhere 40 years later.

Wasn't the end of the world that it wasn't done on me as a baby. Wouldn't have been the end of the world if it had been either.

62. Maybe, but
when I had mine done at 10 I barely felt it. (The first time was done at a Claire's store in the mall, with a gun. The second layer of double-piercing, when I was 12, was done by a 12-year-old with a needle stuck in a lighter flame for a second.) I didn't scream either time. I was more like, wow, that's IT?

the holes close up. I know. I had my ears pierced at 10 years old. The right ear had already grown back closed by the time I was 15, because I only ever wore an earring in my left ear.

As to piercings, you've stirred the hornets nest for me! Her father took her and her older sister to have their ears pierced. They were not toddlers, I fergit how old exactly, but I'd said for YEARS that I disliked earrings on little ones so their (f******) father took both of them one day and had their ears pierced. Now that I think of it, its clear that its one of his MANY sins that still weighs on me. Sorry for the rant.

65. Thanks! The girls wanted their piercings at the time.
I was in the minority, the IGNORED minority. And then there were infections. WHO watched over those??? And how many lost earrings????

As to bowls, I was really joking as that cut is SO cute on SO many little ones! My Julie had/has straight hair, but now its longer and not appreciated for the way it framed her beautiful face! Her older sister's hair was/is beautiful curly, and she's cut it short and IRONED it straight! What they do with age is just a shame (for our memories!)

(That's usually a rite-of-passage for a six year old, too.)

Won't she be surprised!

At least she'll have a Damned Good Reason to start smoking when she's 10 or 11. (The beer and the fucking can wait a year or two.)

It's never too early to show the little ones that the world is a painful and destructive place filled with people who are crazier than shithouse rats.

--d!
(Yes, this was a sarcastic post.)

67. people routinely pierce the ears of their kids.
if its acceptable to her family, this is really not your business and may not be a judgment of what kind of mother she is.

she doesnt have to raise the child with your idea of acceptable piercings

72. i dont know the answer to that. piercings can be removed. tattoos are harder to remove
however, we all raise our kids in our image. so its unfair to force your image on to my kid

73. The OP is apparently a joke, but seriously-you think it's o'key
to force your own image on your own kid, including tattoos, piercings, and what else?

92. Now you need to take some dayquil to end the April Fool's nightmare
I thought I had enough hooks in the OP to tip people off or make them a bit suspicious, which you were, so you were victorious over your brain messing mice!

79. I would think it'd be more dangerous for a toddler. They tend to fall
and get into more things that might pull or rip the ring out.

I don't know, to each their own as they say. I just wouldn't do it with any of my own kids. Maybe it depends on the area. We very seldom even see any nose or eyebrow piercings here and those that we do see are usually University students from other areas.
