Does anyone else hate HGTV with the burning fire of a thousand suns?
I used to enjoy it, but now I find it SO VAPID.

Every fucking house they're decluttering (read: removing all personality), adding granite, and painting it all beige.

Right now there's this lady on, and someone told her her books were "clutter," so she's ditching them all. Why she listened to that asshole in the first place is beyond me. x(

1. Anybody who thinks books are clutter does not read.
:grr:

I moved 23 bookcases and books when I moved into another house!!

Not to mention vinyl records, CDs, DVDs, and videotapes.

Next, some idiot will say that musical instruments are clutter. :wtf:

18. "Decorators" like that are vapid and shallow
and have no concept of true, vital life. They'd want me to ditch my Hammonds and other instruments, and make me replace my good hi-fi system (with stand-mounted loudspeakers I built from a kit) with one of those horrible-sounding Bose systems. :puke:

And paint everything a barfalicious shade of beige.

If it doesn't have books, records, musical instruments, photos, dogs, and a couple lava lites it ain't a house. :D :hippie:

2. I don't think I ever watched it
mainly from looking at the listings and seeing nothing appealing. I got sick of This Old House (whether it's on HGTV or not) simply because they never really covered anything but New England building methods. This relates to HGTV because I never see anything covering incomes that are not in the six-figure and above range. HGTV should just go ahead and rename their channel to MMTB (more money than brains) and be done with it.

3. It used to have good shows, but has devolved into "wealth porn" targeted at vapid proles.
Seriously, 30 minutes of watching millionaires decide which
of 3 mansions they're gonna buy? How the FUCK is that a show?

I'd rather watch 30 minutes of the stuff left on the editing-room floor
from a season of "Bass Fishing Showcase" At least that would
be quiet enough to leave me alone with my own thoughts.

6. My sister watches that, so I usually see some of it when I'm up for a visit...
It's not the sort of thing I'd choose to watch on my own,
but it's a lot more tolerable than anything on HGTV has
been these last few years.

12. You nailed it
I was so excited to get cable again, but when I checked out HGTV, I was disgusted.
I have tried numerous times to watch, but it is just trivial trash these days.

Stop pandering to the wealthy.

7. That's my favorite channel!
I watch it once every month or so, whenever I wind up some place with cable.

Some of the design shows are weak, though. I agree, some of them rip out character and install Home Depot showrooms.

8. I used to watch one of the Discovery channels
when they aired Weird Homes and Weird Wheels. I don't think either are on the air any longer, but they were quite fun and informative when people really used their imaginations in creating their homes (or cars) :)

I think I saw some links for episodes on YouTube. They are worth searching for :D

So, since you do still watch HGTV, what are your favorite shows there? :)

10. House Hunters, mainly.
There were a couple of design shows I used to watch, but I don't remember the names (I'm not a big tv watcher--you can tell my post count). A couple of them had people redesign houses without the owner's knowledge (While You Were Out? Is that one?). I liked the ones that redesigned on a tight budget, using mostly what was already in the house or could be built cheaply. Some were better than others. And I liked the exposes on interesting houses, like "Extreme Houses."

9. I used to watch House Hunters until some friends were on
it and I found out it's a fraud. They had already bought the place they were supposedly seeing for the first time. The other two houses they were shown were shills that they never had any intention of buying. The whole idea was to generate some tv facetime and publicity for the realtor.

I don't watch any of the decorating shows, but I can imagine those places don't look a thing like 99% of the homes people actually live in.

11. That seemed pretty obvious.
Always cracks me up when the realtor calls with the "good news," and the couple is sitting around, clean and well dressed, acting all surprised, like the camera and audio crew behind them didn't tip them off that the call was coming.

13. I do!
They used to have a few crafting shows on. I remember a quilting show, I think. Now it's just shows about people buying stuff.

It was terrible.

I have serious decluttering to do, and it won't involve my books...at least not the ones I plan to read again. :)

my mother is obsessed with HGTV, knows I hate it, and still talks about it to me 24/7.

I also think they're (along with many other TV shows about home improvement) are partially responsible for the collapse of this economy. I mean people would turn on the TV and saw that you could get rich by flipping houses, and many bought into it hook, line, and sinker.

Besides people have their own unique taste. I'd hate to see HGTV come in and yell at you cause your walls are not beige.

ETA I would rather watch Faux News.
