My MIL chose where I am going for my birthday dinner again this year.
Back story: My MIL is kind of a princess, and is also not a native speaker of English. She also suffers from schizophrenia - which IMH estimation gives her a rather large pass in life. It also explains a lot of her behavior. I go through bouts of taking her personally. Thankfully, I am not in one of those spells right now, so I can have some detachment and some amusement about it all.

Last year, about a week before my birthday, she asked me where they could take me for my birthday dinner. I barely got a "Let me think about that and call you back" out when she decided that we were going to this Chinese Buffet near where they live "This way everybody get what they want!" she said.

Yesterday she called and told me that we are going to "steakhouse" for my birthday. Which is what I would have chosen last year... :silly: And actually "steakhouse" works for me this year too.

We let her choose because we do not want her to flip, because she can get kind of ugly when she loses it. Last fall we had gotten into a conversation about the presidential election, she was planning on voting for McCain (she did) because she always votes Republican. When Sarah Palin was mentioned she went into a 45 minute tirade about Sarah's daughter, about the press, about how badly the press was treating her... etc. Suffice to say, all rational thought had left the building. We tried in vain to change the subject because it was obvious to us that Sarah Palin was a source of great pain to her.

1. My dear KitchenWitch!
Oh boy...

I'm glad you can work with it...

I suspect I'd be tempted to slip something into her food...

Well, no...but oh good grief.

Glad you get to go where you want to!

Happy early birthday, sweetie...

You might want to check your email that morning, mmmkay?

:loveya:

2. I think I would have flipped if she were supporting Sarah Palin.
My family may be indifferent when it comes to politics, but they are at least not republican kool-aid drinkers. Schizophrenia is an awful disorder and in some cases the diagnosis is used to blanket other psychotic disorders. I think you are very tolerant, and at least you are going somewhere you might enjoy for your birthday dinner this year. Have a happy birthday!

3. Truth be told, she did not like Sarah Palin, but she LOVES John McCain

4. McCain, no where near as scary as Palin.
Your DH must appreciate your kind tolerance of his mom, really.
