My niece got engaged at Charlie Trotter's; an anonymous person paid for their dinners!
Her fiance wrote a letter to their local paper about the event and it was published today.

Here's the story:

For my fiancée and me, March 28 will forever be one of the most memorable dates ever. On that Saturday night, I proposed to my long-time girlfriend, Rebecca Buller, during dinner at Charlie Trotter's in Chicago.

<snip>

Although my proposal brought tears of joy to her eyes, it was the incredible act of generosity by an anonymous individual at the end of our dinner that left us both speechless. Upon calling over the waiter to get the check, he informed me that our dinner bill, an expensive one at that, had been paid for by an anonymous guest.

After seconds of stunned silence the waiter reiterated that this person did not know us. This was truly a reminder that people can commit great acts of kindness without desiring anything in return.

2. Great minds think alike
My immediate thought was to stage a romantic engagement over dinner at a nice restaurant.* :P

*disclaimer - not that I'd actually DO something like that! O8)

3. That's really nice. I used to pay tolls for the driver behind me.
Long line of rush hour drivers already on the tollway.
I'm on the on-ramp, just prior to the toll both, trying to look 'needy'.
When some kind soul would let me into the stream of traffic, I'd pay the toll booth guy for the nice person behind me.
:-)

4. It's the coolest thing ........
Sometimes I see a senior citizen - almost always a lady - sitting alone in a restaurant, having breakfast or lunch, rarely dinner, by herself.

I always make sure I pick up her tab and just have the waiter tell her that someone thought she was very beautiful.

I'm selfish - it makes me feel good...........................

5. Last year on Mother's Day,
my sister and I took our 85 yo mother, who has Alzheimers, out to lunch, and an anonymous person paid our tab. Thank you for making me think of that again. I want to do something nice like that for someone who is acting like an asshole. Maybe they will rethink their behavior, or maybe they will feel foolish, or maybe they will feel good knowing that it is possible to love even an asshole, or maybe nothing will happen except that I will feel very clever and very good.
