3. Depends on the scholarship.

If it's an athletic scholarship (which it is in his case), then it should be awarded based on athletic ability. If it's an academic scholarship, then it should be based on academic performance. If it's a need-based scholarship, then it should be based on need. I don't have a problem with those different types of scholarships.

I once knew a girl, from a very wealthy family, who had to earn her own way through school. Her parents thought that was the only way she could "make it" in the world. Who knows... the situation might be the same here. :shrug:

Anyway, you don't get to stay rich if you just throw away money offers like that. With billions of dollars in scholarships going unclaimed each year, it's not like him getting that scholarship money means that someone just slightly less qualified but without the means is going without.

As for whether or not Michael Jordan should insist on paying tuition; I'm sure he makes plenty of quiet donations.

From a purely athletic standpoint, he's been a God-send for UNC. God knows how many millions of dollars Nike has pumped into the school.

Besides, he's not the first rich kid to get an athletic scholarship.

That Joakim (or however you spell it) Noah guy from Florida was the son of someone who made millions on the pro tennis tour.

And I don't remember where Bill Laimbeer went to school and I'm too lazy to look it up but Laimbeer's dad was a big Alcoa exec. For years, Laimbeer held the distinction of being the only player in the NBA that made less money than his dad.

the dude's got skills. he can play basketball, i can't. i wager that i'm probably better with computers and graphic arts than young mister jordan.... who knows. either way he's got skills i lack, and he should be allowed to cash in on them.
