Edited on Tue Apr-07-09 06:49 PM by mvd
One that I really like is The Thermals. Others include Metric (they pair a harder rock sound with a jubilant power pop sound very well,) The New Pornographers, Garbage, The Like, Hey Monday, Peter Bjorn & John (don't care for the latest CD as much,) Tilly & The Wall, All Girl Summer Fun Band, The Whigs, Against Me!, Damone, The Dollyrots, Sloan, The Hold Steady, Gaslight Anthem, Barenaked Ladies, Jimmy Eat World, Fountains Of Wayne, The Shins, The Corrs, Camera Obscura, Belle And Sebastian, The Essex Green, Guster, The Doves, Gomez, Rogue Wave, Letters To Cleo when they existed...

Any suggestions?

1. Have you heard Audioslave?
It's made up of former members of Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine and their sound is described as a merging of 70s hard rock and 90s grunge. The singer sounds a little bit like David Coverdale from Whitesnake, and Deep Purple, to me.

2. If Audioslave is power-pop, then Air Supply is black metal
:P

8. I saw the word "guitar" and offered the first band that I thought of
As it turns out, they're not together anymore anyway.

9. Chris Cornell (singer) is working on his solo career
And oddly enough, he's gone off in a pop-soul direction. IIRC Rage is back together again and touring...

7. You're welcome!

They're Scottish and the lead singer sings in a VERY strong Glaswegian accent - which I love, but I find him difficult to understand. But their lyrics are amazing, if heartbreaking, so it might be worth Googling them to read the stories the songs tell.

Hope you like them.

15. I just went to see them a week or two ago...
You can find my recording of the show on Pirate Bay. :)

Have to say, though, they've got the luckiest drummer in the world. A beginner with 5 or so lessons could play what she plays, and she's opening for U2. And she can't even keep a steady beat. (My wife agrees with me on that one, and she's not normally as picky as I am about such things.)

Don't get me wrong, I think they're a great band.

24. I occasionally feel that way about Meg White, when I'm in my " I can play drums
better than she can" mood. After 4 years of lessons and all those years of self-taught playing, I hope I can! :D

There are some great women drummers out there who can play really well, too.

10. Not quite power-pop, but
The Pernice Brothers are always good. Perfect pop songs, with jangly guitars and beautiful harmonies. Great stuff.

They hail from Australia like Youth Group and the duo The Veronicas.

16. The Hi-Fives
They're way done as far as I know. But I saw them open for Hepcat back in 96 and they put on a killer show. I bought one of their CDs and I still rock it to this day. They had a great two minute song called 'Screw The Pooch' that instantly makes me want to dance.

17. You HAVE to hear Jim Boggia.
http://www.jimboggia.com

Sadly, his site doesn't seem to have any samples at the moment, but his MySpace page does:

http://www.myspace.com/jimboggia

"Three Weeks Shy" is an amazing anti-war song, and "To And Fro" is an absolutely brilliant piece of power pop. He's easily one of the greatest writers and performers I've ever heard. Hell of a nice guy, too.

(Actually, you may have heard him before. He's the guy singing "Maniac" in the Kia commercial that parodies "Flashdance". They also used one of his songs in a BlackBerry commercial, and a number of artists have covered his song "Several Thousand," including some guy on "Men In Trees", Constantine from American Idol, and California Transit Authority, the band started by Chicago's original drummer.)

18. Shoes...
Heard on AOR FM radio 30 years ago...

More info here: http://www.blackvinyl.com/3shoes.htm

"Present Tense" & "Tongue Twister" are the two that got airplay... both power pop albums.

19. Was going to suggest Gaslight Anthem...
..then I saw they were on your list. I'm a jaded old music fan (of the punk/hardcore/indie variety along the lines of most of the stuff you posted) and they are one of my favorite recent bands. Just super catchy and straightforward while managing to not sound completely trite.
