7. LST 's were usually numbers only
in rare form , names of people

New Orleans was a famous heavy cruiser, WW2 fought near Guadalcanal 1942

10. Ok.. need help then
To prove to myself I'm not going insane.

I am having little luck finding answers with searches so I prolly have search wrong.

Late-80s A bud I went to Boot Camp/A-school with was stationed to the Iwo Jima (I think). I was an Airdale in Oceana and he was Ship's Company in Norfolk.

His ship was old. I coulda swore it was LST but I must be wrong on that'n. It had a helo squadron assigned to it so it may have been the Iwo Jima "class" I'm remembering. They were LPHs. Helicopter Landing Platform Ships.

I remember his ship doing exercises at Little Creek (what that it?) where hover crafts boarded ship. Either the front or back completely opened up like a gate at a castle.

What does LST mean? lol

Weee!

11. LST landing ship tank
Iwo Jima was not a LST, but more like a assault ship, small carrier, helicopters, etc
used by marines....

My stepdad was on a LCTA (2339) Landing craft tank on D-day

15. There's been several.
No LST's. One CL (light cruiser, WWI era), one CA (heavy cruiser, WWII), one LPH (amphibious assault ship/helicopter), one LPD (brand new amphibious ship, got rammed but a sub a couple weeks ago).
