About 2 years ago, I posted to the Lounge in despair because my kitty had mouth herpes
and even after her teeth were pulled, her condition didn't seem to get better. She was a walking skeleton and it hurt to look at her.

Well, we sat it out because I must be a coward and in about two months after her surgery, her mouth calmed down!

Today, she's a fat, happy, toothless darling and no sign (knock on formica) of the herpes coming back. If it does, I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

My little Friday was named for the day of the week that I'd run out of names for fosters. She spent two months in and out of my closet -- my friend Antonia rescued her from a garbage bin on the Santa Monica promenade. We never could get her adopted because everyone wants a cute kitteh.

She's as ugly as an old tennis shoe and I love her dearly. She's gone from being one of those kitties you can't pick up to being on my lap all day while I'm working. Here she is in the family room, pretending to own the place:

1. What do you mean "pretending" to own the place?
Ah, you must not have gotten the memo.

Seriously though, good looking cat with a nice story.

6. The surgery she needed I could not afford.
It was almost $2K and I'd just lost my job. :scared:

But some things are not negotiable. After weeks of watching her try to eat and not be able to, I just threw down and did it. If I ever go homeless, maybe she'll be willing to wear our cup around her neck.

lol

It is kinda scary too. Some would have put the cat down. It just goes to show that you know when it is time. And they do too.

before her mouth could calm down after the surgery. See, sometimes being a weeny has benefits!

She looks very healthy.

13. The other one is #2 Miss Most Ugly. Little Bella was being pushed out
of one of my foster litters and she was starving. Then, they all came down with an upper respiratory infection. So, I gave them all meds and put Bella in my shirt for a week to keep her warm and hand fed her.

She was also too homely to be adopted by people with semi-decent vision. That's how I got from two cats to four. Sucker!

49. Correct, I thought I saw a white bib..
anyway I have had many of them over time and they seem to be particularly affable.

All calico cats (torts as well I presume) are female. Any male is sterile if he is born with that pattern. So says the internets.

38. my neighbor was told her cat was in kidney failure and had to be put down
That was nine years ago. He was quite a young guy then but very sick and she just was not ready to put him down and decided that she WOULD do all the things that the vets said she wouldn't want to do and were pointless. She gave him sub-cutaneous fluids herself for more than a year, maybe closer to two (brave girl, that guy is FIERCE, you can't even brush him now), and put him on prescription food and, wow, she bought a life for him. If he has kidney failure it sure isn't showing. He visits me every day and challenges my entire brood of 5 cats because he apparently thinks he owns me too. Hokay.

42. Most people never hear these stories.
One of my orphan fosters had been sliced at his throat by some psycho. When I got him, he needed sub-cu irrigation three times a day on top of a bunch of other things. I didn't go to medical school because I'm basically a big baby but somehow, I did that. Nothing like sticking a syringe into a wound that big and ruffled and ugly. We named him "Frankie" for Frankenstein because he was all stitched up around his neck.

He healed completely and became a beautiful black cat. And, he was adopted by a great family. :toast:

17. She is not ugly so stop saying that!
She reminds me of two of our kitties, Elsa and Buddi. We called the little barn kitty Mom's boss gave her "Ferret Face" until she matured out of ferretdom at about a year. So we wrote down kitty names on slips of paper and put them in a bowl. She actually reached in and pulled one out; henceforth she was Elsa. Elsa had a disconcerting habit of going outside and shaking her tail at the neighborhood toms once a month, long after she had been altered.

Buddi was (maybe still is; Mom had to place them when she moved in with Republican Stepdad) a tortie (a little white to go along with the brindle). She came to Mom along with MooMoo the tuxedo, this time from a colleague, and was so named because she was Moo's buddy. (She did also have a similar demeanor to the Kristy McNichol character on Family.) Once while I was in the process of moving from Jersey City to upper Manhattan, I took Mom's air mattress and crashed at the NYC place, which did not have a phone hooked up yet. Mom called NJ and got no answer, then got frantic because she couldn't locate me. :eyes: That's when Buddi nudged open the closet door and pawed at the empty air mattress box! Mom got the message and calmed down...

18. Friday's face would shatter glass but the funny thing is, I don't see that.
It took almost a YEAR to get a purr out of her. I'm not going to get picky at this late date! :)

Omg, she STANK so badly when Antonia brought her to me. She must have been living in trash cans for quite a while -- too long to keep up with her grooming.

There are four other kitties here, all classically beautiful, but the two torties dominate. They are the Terminators of kittehs. :)

Calicos and torties are the feminists of the cat world. The three colors scream (in 999 of 1000 cases), "Look at me! I am female, hear me meow!"

Neither do any of the people here who comment on her looks; you say you don't see ugly...so why the hell are you calling these cats ugly? Who thinks they are ugly? I'm mystified. I think torties are piss elegant.

Edited on Wed Apr-08-09 08:23 PM by EFerrari
because they were fosters, not cats that I'd adopted. Survey says, no one wanted them.

But they're my girls now or, I'm theirs. That latter is probably more accurate. :)

32. Is that what led you to think of them as ugly?
That you couldn't place them, that they were kind of leftovers in your mind? They were just meant to be yours. They planned it that way.

29. Must have taken lots of patience. We had a cat that was a barn cat. It first lived
with two older cats who beat it up. So we took it. Poor little Angus hit under furniture for his first two months at our house. He couldn't stand being held ever. But he got to the point where he would sit in the same room with us. We used to take him up to the cottage where he would hunt and love it. We'd show up midweek at the cottage and he'd show up and was so happy to be there he let us pat him. We did this for years at the cottage. Till finally he just didn't show up one day. I drove up to the lake after work to call him and look for him. But we never saw him again.

30. I love happy endings. I also spent over $1800 on a surgery that I couldn't really afford.
And knowing he'd be deaf after the surgery. Fortunately I've taken the pooch in question, and my cats there for 16+ years and always paid my bills there. So she let me make payments if I could come up with half down.

Worked out well. I had a guilt trip about making him deaf, but he's a lot happier now.

And BTW, I think your kitty is adorable!
