My opposition doesn't stem from the fact that people like this don't deserve such a fate or even worse. That's not for me to determine, but I don't think it is unnatural to want to punish people to the fullest extent possible. But that is why we have a justice system, to protect the accused and convicted from the darkest parts of human nature. When justice that is about vengeance and not about what is best for society is a perversion of justice. And yes if it were my family member that were the victim I probably not only want the death penalty, I would want to do it myself. But that doesn't mean that I should be allowed to.

I am not always very good at expressing myself... so I hope I can do this and that the spirit and intention of it will be understood.

When I was raped... good lord, that was over thirty years ago now... the thing that helped me the most was talking about it.

I don't know if I understood that at the time, but in retrospect, it was the talking about it that kept it "real."

And by "real" I mean that talking about it prevented me from burying it and negating my feelings or exaggerating it and allowing my emotions to completely overwhelm me.

It would have been very easy to go either way.

But day after day, I had to tell a cop or a DA or somebody exactly what happened. Just the facts. And the facts were... the horror was the rapists. Not me. The evil and sickness was the rapists. Not me. They could have easily killed me. They *did* kill my dog. But they didn't kill me. I was alive. And, physically, unharmed. And it was over. Over. It IS over!

Somewhere along the line, I was grateful for two things. One, that I was alive. Two, that this was not my first sexual encounter. (I was in my early twenties and had been questioning myself for not "saving" myself for the right man.)

Is she hanging in there OK (well, as OK as can be expected)? There are always things like Rape Crisis Hotline if she needs to talk to a counselor, and hopefully your community has something like a Rape/Battered Women's Center. Just be there for you, for whatever she needs.
