Any unrepentant grunge weirdos left?
Something about those almost metal, hard rock, guitar, drum dominated, high note hitting, lead singer bands still works for me...

A little Alice in Chains:

A little Sound Garden:

A little Nirvana:

A little Mother Love Bone:

And holy shit Green River is still around!:

Oy vey...to have been born in 1968, raised on 60's and 70's rock/pop, but college got grunge and what fun that was...great music, great guitar, big drums, great almost metal vocals at times, but not...

1. First modern rock song I ever heard on the radio that I realized I really liked...
... was Smells Like Teen Spirit.

I couldn't stand the goddamned 80s, and I never got exposed to what little good stuff there was then anyway. All I was exposed to was pop crap. And I couldn't figure out why I was the only kid my age who KNEW it was crap and couldn't stand it.

2. I was a wee lad at the time, and don't really care much for grunge these days, but I do dig Nirvana.
They were more heavily influenced by punk and alternative than the rest seemed to be.

I'll love this music until I die. But then, I'd say the same thing if nobody ever heard of these bands south of the Columbia River, or east of the Cascades.

5. I have a love/hate relationship with Grunge®
On one hand, it wrenched hard rock away from the metalheads and glamsters and made it cool to play loud, crunchy guitars again.

But on the other, Grunge® and post-grunge effectively killed off other forms of alternative rock and homogenized a whole genre that had a lot of cool, interesting threads going on in the 80s (bands like House of Love, The Wedding Present, Slowdive, and Catherine Wheel got buried by the Grunge® wave of '91).

So, yeah, I like some Grunge® (Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Mudhoney, some Soundgarden) but I can leave a lot of it.

===

And in the interest of full disclosure, I was born in 1969, graduated high school in 1987, and graduated college in 1991. Right in the middle of Gen X, according to most demographers.

8. Another shoegazer, eh?
Damn, I love that stuff. I was living in London from July 1991 to Feb 1992, and it was EVERYWHERE. I got hooked on it, naturally, and still listen to it to this day. I also shared 'em with my friends, and we ended up seeing My Bloody Valentine on the Loveless tour, summer of 1992. Best show I've ever seen.
