Most overrated female vocalist
Stevie Nicks in my opinion. She wrote some exquisite songs but I've never liked her singing voice.

2. I don't recall ANYONE ever praising her voice.
Here other...assets are responsible for her fame.

Hell, how COULD anyone praise her voice? You can't even hear it, it's been so overdubbed and modified to cover up the embarrassing fact that SHE CAN'T SING.

A few years back I saw some sort of Entertainment Tonight story on her, and it featured clips from her childhood. Back then, it seemed, she had a terrific voice. I wonder what happened to it and when we last heard it!

17. Maybe it is due to the type of shit she "sings"
Instead of the overly augumented crap she does, if she did something simplier (and maybe took better care of herself) it would improve.

37. The reason she sounds different is because
her record company got her a vocal coach when they first signed her to help her sing in a higher pitch. They wanted her voice to be more "pop."

I'm a Britney fan and I do think she can sing. She's no Celine Dion but I think people are overly hard on her.

38. She can sing
I don't think it's overly modified. When she sings live (which she did more often when she first started out), she sounded pretty much like she does on the CD. She is more known as an entertainer not so much a singer but there's nothing wrong with that.

13. Madonna is all bluster...
but the one who really makes me CRINGE is
Ashley Simpson.

She is a SYMBOL of mediocrity excelling
with hype.

She can neither sing, nor dance, she
went under the surgeon's knife to conform
to the current "beauty" trends, her hair
color changes every week, and NOW she
is famous for HAVING A BABY, that she
named Bronx Mowgli.

I should not have to know ANYTHING
about this woman.

Don't know if she qualifies for this
thread, because she TECHNICALLY isn't
over-rated, just famous.

I don't know any one who likes her, except
for my husband, who felt sorry for her after
she exposed herself for the complete talentless
sham that she is on Saturday Night Live.

I once heard someone opine that at any gathering of 50 random people, at least two of them will sing better than Jewel. I don't know that she's ever really tried to pass herself off as a great singer, but she's not that great a lyricist, either.

12. Gwen Stefani
She has an alright sounding voice, but she has no range or dynamics. When she sings high, she sounds like a goat. In the super early No Doubt days (pre Tragic Kingdom), they would hide her shortcomings behind the horn section and keys. When they made the switch to a more pop/rock sound, it became pretty apparent Gwen can't sing very well at all. And she's as dumb as a box of rocks.

I might be a little biased considering she threw a beer in my face when I was 16.

31. It's weird saying this in public: In 1991 I was a huge No Doubt fan
I don't know why. They were actually quite spectacular back then. I think my club first show was No Doubt and Sublime at the World Beat Center. They were this really great Ska band. Huge, too. They had 10 people on stage. Just this great wall of sound.

So some years go by, and I had seen them some 10 to 15 times. Then, they went dark for 9 months or so. They finally came back and did a series of shows the beginning Summer of 93 at the LA Troubador. It was the beginning of the 'I'm Just a Girl' phase. Gone were the Rude Boys, Punks, Skinheads and everything else that made their shows exciting. Her brother had departed and though Gwen was always the leadsinger, in the years prior you always got the feeling it was Eric's band. Now, they were just a pop band.

It was horrible.

So. I told them so. In the middle of their set.

Here's a transcript of what was said:

Me: Hey. You suck.

Gwen: Uh, what?

Me: Don't play stupid. You heard me and you suck.

Gwen: Oh, you're a real cool guy, aren't you?

Me: Thanks for noticing :)

Gwen: FUCK YOU PRICK RAWR

And then she dumped a beer on me, a fight broke out (oddly enough, I wasn't involved) and I was ejected.

Compare her histrionic version of "I Will Always Love You" to Dolly Parton's beautiful original. Dolly owns her.

DAMN I hate that rendition of that song and I really really REALLY really hate her voice. She went from being a merely tolerable R&B singer to a wailer that stomps the hell out of every note after tossing it in the air for half a dozen flips. Spine seeking and not at all listen-worthy. Bad bad BAD.

23. Dolores O'Riordan from the Cranberries
Her warbling sounds like a goose getting dismembered with a chainsaw. And the fact that she made some choice racist comments about blacks in the early 90s just seals the deal.

I still maintain that the only reason the Cranberries ever had success was because the record companies were looking for the next Sinead O'Connor.

If they play that damned "Upgrade" commercial again once football season arrives, I may have to pull an Elvis on my TV set.

Shitty lyrics, no melody, just over-embellishment. That's Beyonce. And the girl in the cubicle next to me sets her radio to a station that only plays 8 songs every 40 minutes, and that stupid "Oh oh oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh Uh oh oh" song it in it. I am going to have to ask her to get ear plugs because all the 8 songs are irritating.

51. Mrs. Miller
Edited on Fri Apr-10-09 03:53 PM by KansDem

Greatest Hits

From Wikipedia--
Elva Ruby Connes (October 5, 1907 – July 5, 1997), who recorded under the name Mrs. Elva Miller (and usually simply called "Mrs. Miller"), was an American singer who gained some notoriety in the 1960s for her versions of popular songs like "Moon River", "Monday, Monday", "A Lover's Concerto", and "Downtown" rendered in an untrained, Mermanesque, vibrato-laden voice, often out of tune and off the beat. Her whistling, which was equally wobbly, also featured on a number of her records. According to Irving Wallace, David Wallechinsky, and Amy Wallace in The Book of Lists 2, her voice was often compared to the sound of "roaches scurrying across a trash can lid."
