People selling bikes on Craigslist are NUTS!
They are asking way too much for their OLD bikes, 250 bucks for a bike 20 years old?

Seriously?

1. I assume you don't mean "motorcycle".
You would be shocked at what I've gotten for old useless crap on eBay.

3. I feel ya. Some of the used bike shops are even worse.
The prices at Re-Cycle and Sunrise Cycles are way out of line for what you're buying. I understand they have a cool business model, and they have to eat just like everyone, but sometimes....

Pierre, are you looking to buy? I might be able to point you in some better directions for bike here in our fair city. BTW, very nice to meet you, albeit briefly, the other day.

peace

5. yes I am looking to buy
and dont want to spend uber money on one that has a good chance of being stolen anyway, so am looking for a decent, cheap, used bike.

6. The bike I specifically used as my impetus for this thread...
Edited on Mon Apr-13-09 02:15 PM by Pierre.Suave
was at a re-cycle here locally to me that apparently is ran by insane morans...

edit: and I think 100 bucks for a 15 year old bike is crazy.

7. Re-Cycle: Good Idea, Bad Store.
Re-Cycle is a local store in Mpls that finds/receives in donation old bikes. They then repair them to a "rideable" condition and sell them. Great idea for a variety of reasons; cheap bikes are often the primary transportation for undocumented folks and the urban poor, re-using the frames and parts drastically reduces the carbon footprint associated with new bikes, etc. The problem comes in the product. There is a big difference between a 20 yr old Schwinn and a 20 yr old Cinelli. Too much of what Re-Cycle offers is in the $250 for a 20 yr old Schwinn Traveller category.
That said, good bikes, unlike sports-cars, sailboats and parachutes, retain some value. Spending a little more for a bike that works well makes a huge difference in the riding experience. If you don't like your bike, you won't ride as often.

anyhoo, I should take my advice and go for a ride

peace

8. Try pawn shops.
My father used to get his bikes from pawn shops at about $10 - 20. Though he'd usually have two. One for parts. Of course he was living in Florida (God's Waiting Room as he called it). Pensioners were dying, and there were always cheap deals around.
