Describe the taste of mango in terms of other familiar fruits
Has anyone ever asked you to describe how something tastes before tasting it?

How did you cope?

Is it even possible to describe one tase in terms of other tastes?

1. I agree with you. But having said that, here's what I think
If I *had* to describe a mango in terms of other fruits, I think I'd say a cross between a peach and a pineapple.

My brain just usually blanks when people try to talk about how something tastes.

2. That's close, if we're talking about not fully ripe fruit
Mangoes have a sharp tang when they're on the green side and mellow out as they ripen.

Kind of like bananas which have a slight acidic taste when they're not quite ripe. If you've ever tasted brown bananas, you know that they are as sweet as honey, despite their grody appearance.

3. Right - that's true about ripeness.
I'd amend it to say that the stage of mango that I prefer to eat, reminds me of a mix of a peach and pineapple, which are themselves also at the same ripeness that I like each of them.

I guess that describing the chemical components and their concentrations and pH might be the only objective way to actually do it. And I have no doubt that such flavor profiles actually exist in food laboratories.

4. The closest description I've heard, of a ripe mango,
is from a friend of mine, 20 years ago. I think he has come the closest:

A ripe mango tastes like a peach, if you subtract the taste of orange...

Of course, you have to actually taste a ripe mango to understand what he meant...

5. Ouch, that just hurts my brain
It's bad enough trying to add flavors!

But subtract? LOL... yikes

And besides, I can't really say that I've ever detected any orangeness in a peach!

Flavors confuse me. Really. I think that I could deal with them better if they were just distilled down to their chemical profiles, lol. Sorta like that scene in The Matrix where the guy watching the computer screen can see all sorts of things ("the lady in red") that just look like code to the rest of us.

21. Here's how:
Edited on Tue Apr-14-09 12:31 PM by Xipe Totec
Take a ripe mango, and stick a fork on the stem side.

Then, score the skin with a sharp knife, then peel back the skin.

Now holding the mango by the fork, slice the flesh from the pit sliding the knife along the pit.

Eat the slices.

Or, better yet, drop the slices in a blender, add crushed ice, sugar, a little bit of milk, and blend into a nice mango milk shake.

You may compensate the loss of volume with -- yeah, you guessed it -- more mangos! :9

16. The taste of a mango reminds me of a peach.
Strangely enough, the taste of papaya reminds me of a mango, but is NOTHIING like a peach. That always seemed strange to me. I figured I was just weird. I'm glad to see mango reminds others of a peach as well. Maybe I'm only half weird.

17. It tastes like a mango. People ask me all the time...
what things taste like or what they should eat.

I hate them. I despise their cowardice thinking that the taste of something strange will kill them, make them blind, or somehow change their lives forever.

I'm not talking about wierd stuff like live octopus or beating snake heart. Or even bugs. Just new things like white eggplant. And mangos.

So, JUST EAT THE FUCKING THING AND SHUT UP ABOUT IT!

(You will never know how good it is unless you taste it for yourself.)

42. No joke. Watermelon is bomb
Cherry, strawberry, melon, I am a fruit maniac. But mango ruins anything it touches. I hate it. And it has apparently become trendy, thus ruining many things that I would normally love, and compounding my hate of it.

If it was like anchovies, leaving me alone unless I request it, then we could coexist. But no, Mango has to go getting all intrusive.

Or, you're tasting the resin on the skin rather than the fruit.

I break out in poison ivy style rashes in my instep and the back of my knees. Have the same reaction to cashews. And I love cashews and mangoes. So just being allergic wouldn't make them taste bitter.

26. Are you sure you've eaten ripe ones? I have...
trouble figuring out just when is the best time to eat them, so often to get them in a jar. There's also that "invisible pit" in the middle that you could eat by mistake.

Anyway, yeah, they aren't ever sugary sweet, at least the ones we get here. But supermarket pears and peaches tend to be kinda mealy and nasty, too-- nothing like tree ripened.

If you've tasted at least a half dozen varieties of mangos, I won't argue.

Otherwise, maybe you haven't really had a chance to try them.

29. Mango got it going on.
First you have the rush of very sweet fruits like maybe an orange or watermelon, but
then you have the acid and tartness of citrus like maybe a lemon.

Mango = Orange + Lemon = Watermelon + Lemon ?

The texture is more like an avocado with some fiber thrown in.

Now they are importing the Alphonso into the U.S.
