Anyone know where I can assistance for medication?
I just got back from clinic with a Nexium prescriptio--$184 for a 30 days supply. I thought there were some assistance groups that could help with meds. Anyone know?

Buy it on line

26. Gotta be careful buying generic stuff like this on line though
there are a LOT of fake drugs out there....My company won't let me view this website, which makes me wonder how kosher it is because I am after all at a scientific firm.

7. You need to get the forms from your doctor.
Edited on Tue Apr-14-09 01:12 PM by Midlodemocrat
S/He will give you the forms for the program the manufacturer offers. The programs are specific to the individual medication/manufacturer.

Pretty straightforward forms. You get the doc to fill out part, you fill out part, you mail it in, you're good to go.

In the meantime, ask for samples. Nexium is a heavily sampled drug. The doc should have tons. If he doesn't, ask him to contact the rep and get some for you. He should be willing to do that.

8. Nexium is just a fancier version of Prilosec
http://gerd.emedtv.com/prilosec/prilosec-vs.-nexium.html

Ask your doctor if you can take the generic version of Prilosec instead. Most doctors also have information about patient assistance plans run by the drug companies. It can't hurt to ask.

17. Don't all PPIs do that?
It's the acid erosion that triggers BE so it would seem that anything that mitigates that also lessens the odds of developing esophageal cancer and its precursors. Any proton pump inhibitor that works for you ought to do the same thing.

18. I believe, and I could be wrong, but that would be extremely unlikely,
HAHAHA, just kidding about the extremely unlikely part.

that the PPIs work to prevent the acid from being made in the first place, but that the Nexium actually helps to heal the esophagus.

Interesting little known fun fact about PPIs. If taking them, you are more susceptible to stomach bugs and generally stomach ickies because the acid that would normally be produced is not, and the acid is what would destroy the weaker bugs.

This has been the Midlo Health Department Update for the Day. Tomorrow we will discuss scabies.

34. actually both of them work to heal the esophagus
by exactly the same mechanism, reducing the acid exposure. I think you may have fallen for Nexium p.r.. Neither of them has any active ingredient that acts directly on the esophagus. Nexium is what is called a "me too" drug, a slight change in the molecule which allows a company to promote a new brand for a full patent term as a Superior Product. The change is driven by marketing rather than basic improvements in the behavior of the medication, despite the comparison studies produced by the company which purport to demonstrate just that. If you can't demonstrate some edge in a small sample in any individual study you don't publish the study and bind the researchers with confidentiality agreements.

32. I would take Omeprazole over the counter if you don't qualify for other help.
It's the generic for Prilosec. Same type of drug. You can take it twice a day if once a day isn't cutting it.
Some folks take a combo of a PPI (drugs like Nexium and Prilosec) and an H2 inhibitor (Zantac or Pepcid, which are available OTC and in generic form also).
