Can one send money to Paypal without having an account?
A few years ago I was going to open one, saw the long convoluted "agreement" and closed it. Both DU and sellers on eBay accept donations thru Paypal by charging an extra buck, or two. Will this work with individuals?

A DUer a few weeks ago posted a plea for help but I don't have a Paypal account and would like to help.

1. yes, but...
you can send money to someone without having a Paypal account. I recommend never, ever getting a Paypal account. At the very least, never give them your bank account numbers. Use a credit card to make the payment but never, ever give them access to your actual bank account. They stole $72 from me 3 years ago and denied they did it, even though my bank proved that Paypal was the recipient. There are dishonest people working for Paypal. Only use a credit card to make the payment, but don't create an account there. You're just asking for endless headaches and trouble. Horror stories at paypalsucks.com

2. Wow! Glad I am staying out of it
Now I will have to figure out the mechanics of it.

4. wow...
I'm glad my instincts were right but you do have to share some info even to pay with a credit card don't you? I'm hoping I didn't offer any more than the minimum. I'm still glad I used it to pitch in.

8. yes,
you have to give your credit card number, name, expiration date, as with any online payment using a credit card. But with a credit card, you can always dispute the charge later if something isn't right about it. That kind of shields you from them actually getting direct access to your money. I don't know how prevalent credit card problems are with Paypal. Maybe those are trouble-free. I only know my own experience with Paypal getting its claws into my checking account, and the stories I have read at paypalsucks.com. I think it's possible to safely have a PayPal account, as long as you don't give them your bank account numbers. If you have money sitting in your Paypal account, you can have them mail you a check, which takes a few days and costs you $1.50 but to me it's worth it, to avoid the danger of Paypal having direct access to my money. They never know my account number or even what bank. I think the root of the problem with Paypal is that they are performing many of the functions of a bank, yet since technically they are not a bank, they are not subject to many banking regulations. They can freeze the money in your Paypal account unexpectedly and for no apparent reason, and hold on to that money as long as they want to, for one thing. Also I believe there are some shady people working at Paypal, making unauthorized transactions and hoping the corporate veil will shield them from prosecution. I only know for sure in my case that someone got $72 from my checking account, and my bank stated the payee was Paypal, and I could have filed a claim against it with my bank, but I discovered it just 2 days past the 30-day limit. So my bank would do nothing about it, and Paypal denied several times that the transaction ever happened. Needless to say I stopped accepting Paypal at my site and I discourage people from using Paypal whenever the subject comes up.

9. I've had a PayPal account for over 8 years
Never had a problem with either ebay or paypal in that time. I buy and sell on ebay all the time. Over the years I've moved several thousand dollars both ways by paypal.

3. You do need a PayPal account
I have been kind of wary about opening one of those, and especially about creating a link to my bank account online, but I took another look to contribute to the DUer. It turns out that you don't have to link it up to your bank account. I just connected it to a specific credit card that has a low limit so even if everything that could go wrong did I wouldn't be too inconvenienced. So I was able to make a contribution as an individual to an individual just putting it on this credit card. I wouldn't be put off by the agreement ...to use it as you want to is quite straightforward. All you need is two people who each have a PayPal account.

Actually I closed my first one when I could not see a way to avoid sharing my bank info. I'm not ready to go there, but I don't really need to either.

5. Thanks. This is probably a good idea
open an account, make the transaction, and then close it.

7. DU Donation
Edited on Tue Apr-14-09 11:56 PM by hibbing
Hi,
I wish I could have just set up a monthly donation via credit card to DU, but I either had to do paypal or mail in a check every month? Not happy about it.

Peace

10. It really isn't necessary
I always give during appeals using my credit card. It mentions PayPal but that has to do with DU not with me since at the time I never had any PayPal account myself...it's just what they have to use to collect money.
