RIP Sam
We'll miss your furry football-ness. Sam was the instigator of most of the guinea pig cacophony in the house, wheeking and chirruping and purring all the time. He would set the other two off all the time.

Dropkid was heartbroken and sad last night when we found him stiff and dead. Through her tears, we had the great guinea pig corpse disposal debate(my responses in bold).

"Can we bury him in the backyard?"
"No, we rent, it's dark, it's raining, and Agatha would probably dig him up and eat him once he started to stink."
"Well, can we burn him?"
"Why?"
"Because I want his ashes."
"Where would we burn him?"
"In the backyard."
"It's dark, it's raining, and we'd never get a fire hot enough to burn him good enough to get the right kind of ashes, plus we'd probably get in trouble, so no."
"Well, then we can burn him in the alley"
"There's still the problem of getting a hot enough fire."
"What if we used a lot of lighter fluid?"
"We'd still probably get in trouble, honey."
"Can we get him stuffed? Then I could still pet him and wouldn't miss him so much."
"No honey, we're not going to get him stuffed. But I'll tell you what. I work with a guy who does taxidermy and, the next guinea pig that dies, I'll ask him if he could stuff that one for us, okay?"
"Okay. But what are we going to do with Sam?"
"Sam is going into a very special ziploc bag in the garbage and I'll take it out tonight because the garbage men are coming in the morning so no raccoons will dig him out to eat him."
*sniff sniff*"Okay. Goodbye Sam."

I talked to Jeff at work today. He said he'd be happy to stuff our next guinea pig that shits the bed.

Peeking out from behind the hay bin

Sam is the one in the middle

3. I'm so sorry.
These things suck for little kids. But your dialogue put a wistful smile on my face. What a cute little GP.

4. Dropkid is obsessed with stuffing our pets when they die
She's a huge fan of Scrubs, and got the idea from Rowdy, JD and Turk's dog they had stuffed. She thinks it's an awesome idea.

Sam was a nice little piggie. I can't imagine the trauma that'll happen when Frodo goes, he's the oldest at 5 years (he's the one on the right in the picture) and definitely the favorite of the herd.

5. You'll have to read the pertinent chapter out of Alan Alda's book:
Never Have Your Dog Stuffed...

It is so hard to let animals go. I still hold out hope that Merlin will come back someday. Heck, I hold out hope that Merlin's Daddy (MrG) will come back someday.

12. oh god, a friend of mine had her dog stuffed -- and she regrets it
Cremated, yes, stuffed, no. The dog freaks her out - she feels like he's always watching her - so she's put a huge cowboy hat over him. Of course, she can't throw him away, or give him away.

Hi ScreemingMeemie. Was just thinking about you the other day - hadn't seen you here lately. :hi:

there's a cat in the freezer in the garage that needs to be buried tomorrow.
when they die in january, it's kind of hard to get them into the ground around here.

13. Sorry to hear it...I remember when my hamsters died...
my parents took me to the Woolworth's in Neshaminy Mall in Bensalem and got me two hamsters (sisters) because I got an A+ on my exams. We named them Goldie ( Goldie Hawn ) and Samantha ( from Bewitched ) My Dad had the hots for Elizabeth Montgomery and Goldie Hawn ( as did I at that age ) what else can I say?

Anyway, the hamsters always fought ( Goldie chewed off a piece of Samanthas ear ) and they had escaped one morning from their Habitrail. I still remember my Mom waking me up at six in the morning screaming "Mark, the hamsters are loose!!!! your brother is trying to find them get up!!!!" She really didn't like any rodents....funny thing is, she became attached to them when we found one of the lost ones and my brother picked it up in his hand. He held it up to my Mom, who couldn't even stand to look at it and said " Come on, Mom....just pet it! " She did....and you know what? She STILL talks about those hamsters to this day, and how they reacted to her ( the other lost hamster she encountered when she was walking towards the kitchen and the hamster was there..just stood up on its legs looking at her...and she froze. since then, she STILL talks about those "rodents" but with affection.
