And I stand there watching to see if he's barking for any good reason, before calling him back inside. I'm being a watchful neighbor. Is that so wrong?

1. I do that. People up to no good will leave the area, hopefully.

2. Plus, if we don't let the barking dog go out to investigate, he'll just keep barking anyway.
Somebody broke into my boyfriend's truck last year, in the driveway. Our cute dog probably barked, but we probably ignored his concerns.

3. I have two dogs and one
has a distinct bark for whatever occasion arises.

She has a "strange cat in the yard" bark, a "come play with me NOW" bark, a "dogs passing by" bark, "boats in the canal" bark, and a most ferocious bark for a strange human.

I find it quite helpful. She is a good girl.

She is getting old now and I think she has a new bark for imaginary things, poor baby.

4. My dog has different barks.
I can always tell when it's a "Hey! Strange human alert!" bark, because it sounds completely different--more serious and more cautious at the same time. His "strange cat" bark is loud but not threatening, per se. His "I gotta go pee!" or "I'm hungry!" barks have a slight pleading tone that's easy to pick up.

And yes--when he does his "Strange human alert" bark, I let him out into the gated front porch and watch what he does.
