Sometimes I wish I wasn't quite as empathic
I need a touch of sociopath in me. Basically, I had to turn someone down that I had been talking to. She was hurt and now I am, too. I haven't had a drink in about 4 months, but I think I could chug down about 6 of them right now.

3. My dear Droopy...
Ah, sweetie...

But if you didn't feel the pain, then you wouldn't be open for the joy...

I am sorry, still...

I hope you both will soon be able to move away from this painful episode, and separately onto happier things...

6. Thanks Peggy
I'm sure she will find a good person. I don't know about me, though.

5. There are some thoughts on over empathy. If your interested to hear them
Edited on Sun Apr-19-09 03:01 AM by RandomThoughts
If you empathises with someone you can not help, the overall sadness in the world goes up not down. If empathy can be used by an individual to be a person they would rather be, or help others they can help, then that growth or inclusion of empathy helps the world.

In your case, your ability to empathise with her allowed you to be kind in the manner you spoke to her, and probably why she liked you in the first place.

Many times empathising can lead to action, so keeping a level of empathy there for as many as possible usually is helpful, but it is also important to know that a person can only do so much, and I don't think life is a score card or a comparison of who does more.

People can only stretch there resources so far, and that creates trade offs, but how people choose who is in there group, I think should be based on if you could improve another's life, or the best way to do it, not just what is best for the individual. Or more likely some balance of the two.

The lady with only 2 cents I think explains some of this.

I won't stop being empathic. It would be impossible. Your words have been helpful.
