Oh great. I need a fridge repair expert. :-(

Woke up this morning and the freezer part of my upright fridge wasn't cold. Water dripping in a puddle on the floor, mostly from the melting ice maker.

The fridge part *seemed* OK. So I stoped the ice maker and continued with my morning routine....

Then I heard a succession of LOUD POPS!

Eek!

So, I unplugged it and here I sit.

Need a repair man. Shit. Just what I need right now. :P

Hope you're having a better morning than me. :hi:

1. Good luck1
Most often if it involves freon, the fridge is not worth repairing. The melting ice sounds like a freon problem. The pops, I don't know.

2. Thanks, I was afraid
that it might be freon related.

:P

I really can't afford a new full refrigerator right now. Dammit! x(

3. I usually just call Sears out to repair. They are fairly quick
and I have been pleased with their service. They will work on all appliances, not just Kenmore or ones Sears sells.

6. Compared to me screwing it up, yes.
More reliable than free-lance repairmen, imho.

They fixed my ice-maker (which was leaking) for $65 a few month ago. Showed up on time, gave me a detailed invoice, followed up with a "how was our service and was our repairman polite?" phone call the next day.

5. Start it back up and tell me what happens

Don't worry about the popping. Make note of the order of events such as fans, compressor, etc. Also, what make and model is it?

Edited to add: I was a GE Appliance Repairman for a few years. I've solved people's appliance woes on here before.

9. Don't be
Refrigerators have fail safe overtemp relays. Your fridge will not catch fire.

11. Is there a way to replace the gasket on my freezer?
The fridge is only a couple of years old; back up one for the garage, but some asshat Midlet stuffed it too full and now the gasket won't seal correctly.

Currently being held shut with duct tape.

12. Explain how it's not shutting correctly
You can replace a gasket, but given the scenario I suspect the hinge is binding or something else is happening.

Also, if your gasket is just held in by a slip-notch (ie not screwed in) you can take it off, stick it in the dryer for a a minute or two, and reset it's form.

14. I think you might be right. I think the door is either warped
or the hinge is bent.

13. we had a similar problem - I think the drain was clogged or something
with ice that had jammed it, after which it started to leak, etc. We just called the appliance fix-it place and It wasn't that expensive to fix.

16. Given her description
That's unlikely to be the problem. Unless the water clog has stopped the circulation fan from running or has frozen an air duct completely shut, a clogged drain will usually only cause some water/ice spillage into the freezer compartment.
