1. You mean like a netbook?
A friend of mine bought an HP for $399 and I'm using it right now.

What kind you thinking of getting?

Q3JR4.

2. Not a good idea for a person's primary computer.
At least not if they will be using it for some intensive tasks like I suspect your son will: writing papers, etc. The screen is small, the keyboard is small, they don't always come with CD/DVD drives, etc. They have a niche - generally it's workers who have a desktop PC but take frequent short business trips so they need something small and light that they can catch up on e-mail and maybe give a presentation with, then get back to their desk to do the real work.

4. He has a desktop tower
I was thinking something more portable for taking notes in class.

6. Oh for that it'd be just about perfect.
Long battery life, portable. Could be just the thing!

3. It's really cool for mobile internet usage, and watching movies while in transit.
It's cool for short term usage like a plane flight, etc. But as a primary computer usage, no. Still, for a graduation gift costing approximately $300 it's really neat. Me and the wife will each get one.

7. My mom got one. She tried the version with Linux as the OS,
but Netflix streaming and all of her game sites required Windows as an OS, so she got one with XP and gave the Linux one to Dad, haha. She loves it.

9. I hear they are good for email and stuff like that, but don't have any
major processing power. I looked into them but decided to wait and save for a laptop.
