Jesus Christ, I have to stop watching those science shows!

Apparently, in addition to all the normal volcanoes in the world, there are about a dozen or so "super volcanoes." These have very long periods of inactivity followed by collosal eruptions that throw at least 240 cubic miles of ash into the air. (Compare that to the one cubic kilometer of produced by the Mt. St. Helen's eruption.) Apparently, the largest is one that occupies about half of Yellowstone NP. It is estimated to be on a 600,000 year cycle and it last erupted 640,000 years ago. It it goes off again, the whole N. American continent will be covered with ash causing mass death of humans, plants and animals and will cause a small ice age globally.

So yeah, if you want some nightmare fuel, try reading about super volcanoes.

6. Hah... I like the ones about the island volcanoes that

destroy the entire island, sending a massive tsunami all over... e.g. Krakatoa.

Anak Krakatau is one they're watching for that.

did a movie based on the historical records of Krakatau...It was very interesting!

but I think I saw some clips used in a documentary about it... they showed the people who were living on a nearby island in the days leading up to the eruption. I wonder if they'll show it again.
