Whether or not you believe in boycotting the businesses.

Carl's Jr./Hardee's

1. Any that are capitalist, make a profit, lose money, use resources, have expectations of their workers
or have workers.

At least, I think that's what it boils down to from the Liberal Purity Party part of the party.

3. Blockbuster
Actually, ANYONE who believes in free speech should boycott that place. For that matter, anyone who likes a decent selection of movies should boycott it, too. Netflix is so much better, anyway.

Fill me in (yes, I'm ignorant).

What's the issue with Blockbuster?

7. They won't keep certain movies in stock that have "too much sex" in them.
Mind you, these are standard "R" movies, and they stock all the ultra-violent "R" movies. It's just sex they have an issue with. And I've heard in some states they've actually been caught editing the movies they rent, too.

8. It is a bit hypocritical, isn't it?
The graphic violence is OK, but God forbid we see any depiction of sex!

Thanks for enlightening me.

11. That's not really a free speech issue, though
McDonalds doesn't sell quadruple cheeseburgers. That's not because they're censoring quadruple cheeseburgers; they simply choose not to sell them.

Blockbuster is much the same. They've made a business decision not to offer movies with certain content.

It's a dumb policy, but it's not illegal, so as far as I'm concerned they're welcome to do it. As you note, Netflix is better, and before too long Blockbuster will implode and that'll be the end of it.

Editing the films may be another matter, however. If they're actually altering the content of copyrighted materials, then that's an issue that has nothing to do with free speech. I would be surprised to learn that this was an official corporate policy rather than an action by a few branches or franchises.

Still, it's no more a free speech issue than Skinner setting rules about what can and can't be posted on this privately-owned forum.

14. True, and one further. Netflix doesn't have foot traffic, so customers with kids
aren't going to worry about Skippy seeing jacket covers for "Dolly Does Detroit With Fishnet Dildoes." Blockbuster does have to worry about customer reaction to such issues.

Back in yonder years which aren't really that yonder, video stores had a separate room for the nudie stuff, but even the existence of that room gave the entire store a seedy reputation. Blockbuster chooses to avoid it.

I agree completely (it's one of my pet peeves, in fact) that there is a sick contradiction in seeing extreme violence as more acceptable than gentle but explicit lovemaking, but it is a sickness in our society, and Blockbuster isn't in the business of fighting crusades.

19. Dominos are mostly franchised, so the owners are small businessfolk with diverse views.
Probably true of many of the companies we trash. The local owner could be a flaming freedom-loving liberal pacifist, and his employees struggling students and retirees with no other job options.

18. Every business has some manager or owner who has views offensive to us.
Grow our own, make our own clothing, and walk to work in hand-woven moccasins. That's my method.

PS--No animals are harmed in the making of my mocassins. I use only paper from recycled handle-less Ralphs grocery bags.
