Be proud because that's normally not like me.

I'm currently at my school's library and on the way in I stopped to re-up the book I've had taken out all semester (why buy when you can borrow). The guy's having a horrible time spelling my name so he turns the screen to me and I guide him through it and it only takes him about 3 more tries. Not a problem though since I've got hours until class to kill.

When my name comes up on the screen I see another book under my name and ask about it since Black's Law is the only book I've taken out at this library, ever.

Sniffa: What's that?

Library guy: "A Man's Life." It's overdue by the way. Did you bring that with you.

Sniffa: I never took that book out.

Library guy: You obviously did take the book out. It's in the computer.

Sniffa: I know it's in the computer but I never took the book out. This book is the only one I've taken out.

Library guy: Maybe you just forgot that you took it out.

Sniffa: No. I didn't take that book out.

Library guy: Then why would it be in the computer.

Sniffa: I don't know! (my short fuse is starting to burn off)

Library guy: Let me get my manager.

Manager: What's up?

Library guy: This guy says he never borrowed this book but it's under his name in the computer.

Manager: Well, why is your name listed here if you didn't take it out?

Sniffa: I don't know!

Manager: Are you a student here?

Sniffa: Yes I'm a student. Could I have taken out books if I weren't?

Manager: Well, let's see if there are any other Sniffa's at this school. Nope, it's only you. You must have taken the book out.

Sniffa: Look! This is the only book I've ever taken out here! The book you're saying I took out has nothing to do with what I'm going to school here for! - Land Surveying.

Manager: Hmmm. I'll just remove this from your file and mark it as missing.

Sniffa: Thank you!

Manager: Have a good day.

Sniffa: You too.

3. Hey, the computer is NEVER wrong!
My wife got a ticket for one of those EZ Pass things on the PA Turnpike a few years back. We don't have one of those and always pay cash. They said she ran the toll booth. I went back and forth with them on this. Without a receipt to PROVE she paid cash, the computer is right. They were going to suspend her license if we didn't pay the $35 or so fine. Fuckers. There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY to fight that shit!

6. When I lived in Mass. I had a BPL card.
At that time they were a mess. At least once a year they'd claim that I hadn't returned a long overdue book, and I'd take down the number, go to the stacks and find it, then bring it down to the circulation desk. Fortunately for me this always worked. I don't know how I would have proved it otherwise.

I also that there was another patron with my same first and last name (an unusual first name for my common last name) and they almost charged out my books to her account. This was before they had reliable scanners for the cards and the staff found it easier to just search on name.
From that point on I made sure to give them my name and city.

10. I was banned from pretty much every library when I was a kid
Well, not banned but unable to borrow books because of a huge fine for 17 books that were overdue for months. I took them out for my science fair project and I don't think I used one of them. They just sat on my floor where I forgot about them.

7. Wouldn't it be funny if Dave had the book?
Not "haha" funny, but "WTF is Dave doing with a library book that I never checked out" funny.

8. If he did have it
it would be to hold up one end of the couch. He doesn't do that reading shit. Actually a funny Dave story was his one time addiction to the newspaper. He had a real problem. Everyday he had to get a newspaper and read the whole thing. It took him a while but he finally was able to end his newspaper addiction. Now he doesn't give a fuck what's going on in the world.

12. I have a love/hate relationship with libraries
I was once accused of not returning a DVD, just the case. Knowing how easy it is to misplace discs I double and triple checked before dropping it in the bin. So they accused me and froze my account until I settled up. I got a call from them a week later saying that they found it. No apologies of course but at least I could check out material again. The next time I had stuff to return, I stood in line so that a human could verify that everything was there only to be told that I had to use the bin and that the counter is only for checking out material.

13. Glad you got it straighted out. Once the library accused me of still
having a book checked out that I knew I had returned. I went to the shelf in the stacks and saw it there. Went back to the front desk and said "Go look on the shelf, it's there."

Library desk lady: "Oh. Nevermind then. I'll marked this as checked in then."

Obviously it had happened before.

14. It's weird though - I never checked that book out
If they didn't resolve it today they'd hold up my transcripts and such until I paid for the book. I may have to go back next week to make sure it's really gone or some other book hasn't been added to my name.

On a side note I got my 2nd exam back and got another B (although 1.5 pts higher than exam 1). I'm disappointed but it could have been worse. I don't want some bogus library charge holding me back from using my 'B' towards the PLS.

15. Great that you are getting your PLS! That material is difficult
I'm sure, so be proud of your grades. I once had to pay off a very old parking ticket on campus so they wouldn't hold my diploma hostage. Bastids.
