My neighbor warms his car up for 45 minutes!
He has a remote starter and warms up his car for anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. I've heard it's better to just start up the car and go. What a waste of gas, in my opinion.

3. DH says it's better for the engine overall to let it warm up a bit before going
But 45 minutes is excessive in the extreme, I think.

4. Even on the coldest days, ten minutes is usually sufficient.
Well, unless you are too lazy to scrape the windshield and expect the defroster to do the entire job.

Otherwise, get in and go. And remote starters are for lazy morons.

5. My dad, an engineer taught me to warm up for 15 seconds, more if it is really cold.
But your neighbor is such an ass, he is probably doing it so he doesn't have to sit in a cold car.

7. Tom and Ray Magliozzi (Car Talk) say it's best
to just get in and drive at a moderate speed til the engine starts to warm up. The engine will also warm up a lot faster that way.

9. that's ridiculous
my car gets a minute max of idle time before i leave. it takes probably twice as long for her to warm up if she's just idling in the driveway than if i'm driving it. the family backup car, an 88 buick station wagon, gets to idle for three or four minutes when it's really cold because it'll just stall out if you don't let it do that.

the garages ran under the bedrooms of the apartment i had in college. one neighbor went to work at 5 or 6 a.m. and would idle his car in his garage for at least a half hour every morning, which meant i would lose at least an hour of sleep. he was snotty with me when i talked to him about it, but he cut his idle time down to about ten minutes.

10. It's not even that cold
A few minutes, at most, would be enough warm up time.

11. Guy across the street warms up his El Camino for a half hour
Starts it up, goes in the house, comes out, guns it, goes back in the house, comes back out, guns it again, all over the course of a half hour.

Told a friend that "it sounds like he has an aircraft engine in there."

He said "He probably put a blower on it."

A little shop talk for all of you motorheads out there.
