In my younger days our squad did transports home (when we had enough man power to do this) and it was not uncommon to take people home for what would likely be their last trip. I found the conversations (I liked to talk to my patients as it helped to pass the time and usually made them feel better) difficult and I felt awkward. I would worry that I would say the wrong thing (like make references to the future) and was often at a loss as to what to say to them (usually striking up a conversation was pretty easy).
So I give credit to those that deal with this difficult situation on a regular basis. It takes a special type of person to do that.
