My ex fashioned himself a super-duper lefty "progressive," but he's easily the most sexist pig I've ever encountered. He HATED it when I was right, and eventually either stopped bringing up any sort of debate-worthy subjects at all, or performed the exact same tactic you described in your OP, which was a convenient way to belittle my opinions.

Try tactics until you have a handle on the stupid.

Taking a moment to assess the point of view of the asshole you're arguing with can really go a long way toward finding a way to turn the argument so that you can piss him off... and that can be a reward in itself.
