Wish I could use shift-arrow keys to move the cursor between words, but it's a keyboard unrecognized by Apple (Logitech Wave -- I had downloaded the Logitech control center but haven't really tinkered yet... am thinking of getting the Logitech backlit keyboard (G15?) to complement my G9 mouse...)

The logitech keyboards usually play well w/Macs.

The glossy would drive me crazy w/the PS work I have to do, unfortunately (is there an add-on screen for that?). Right now I use a Dell 2407-wfp HC along with a MBP and it's a great combination. Drop-dead gorgeous color, even before calibration.

Logitech's a good brand and it's nice to know they have Mac support.

I loved the MS Natural keyboard 4000... except the keys would die after a while and I'd have to get a replacement. Sheer waste of money for their nicely designed yet cheap crap.

Dell makes good monitors as well; the 2407-WFP as I recall sounds uses a solid quality panel as well... I might get one as the secondary unit if my Soyo can't be made comparable, which is not likely... or keep the Soyo for word processing and the Mac's monitor for graphic processing (Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver...)

1. I still wouldn't touch a 20" iMac or most of their Macbooks (I'll get a high end iMac or a Mac Pro any day) and I'm still not keen on an iPhone... I'm very particular... so I'll recompense for 70% of my comments. I've already started and, indeed, Apple would do itself credit to go into a little more detail so more people don't get the wrong impression... mind you, with the field I'm moving into, the upper end gear is what I was homing in on in the first place...

2. I'm broke - student loans but it's worth it. How about X-rated favors instead? :wow: :evilgrin:

The cost of the monitor alone makes the 24" iMac a very worthwhile purchase... (the 20" model still uses crappy TN panels... but so do retail brand 24" monitors. There's a big plus for the iMac with the 24" screens...)

I've never really had a desktop that I've built myself. I have one that I use for work but not for personal use. I like the new iMacs and I have a Mac so I wouldn't sacrifice any hardware in the process.

But the downside of new Apples for me has always been the price. I can build a new desktop for $1500 ($1700 w/monitor) versus a new Mac with the same specs would run me nearly $2K.

Especially as standard PC notebooks using Intel CPUs and chipsets run $600~1500 and Macbooks and Macbook Pros are $1200~$2700... my Asus laptop with 8GB of RAM cost me $1700 net including the 3 year warranty plan w/accidental coverage - and its specs blow the $2000 Macbook Pro out of the water (save for the Macbook Pro display, but I wouldn't do image editing requiring color precision out in the field and I don't see doing that for a few years yet.)

It's still a valid point, the costs, depending on the situation at hand, though the quality of the 24" monitor, combined with the support of Adobe corporation, was enough to get me to switch. Your typical 24" monitor is a crappy TN panel that displays colors poorly. Even those that boast 92% NTSC gamut are getting poor marks for poor brightness and color tone changing... TN panels are junk and are not worth 500 pennies, much less 500 dollars...

I'd love it if Apple opened OS X to non-branded hardware (it's a green thing to do; my current hardware just sits and nobody is in the market for a high end Q9650 home-built system, so I might use it as a server after replacing the video card and power supply to something less extreme).

There are valid reasons TO use certain Mac branded models, especially higher end iMacs and Mac Pros... then again, Mac's strong points have always been graphic design/visual arts... but OS X is a heckuvalot better than Vista or XP...

what specs were you looking at? I could homebuild a dual quad-core system for about $1800 - a similar Mac Pro is $2200, but with 2 instead of 8GB of RAM. By the time Winbloat licensing comes in, the platforms are on par again...

20. I'd love it if Apple opened Mac OS to non branded systems.

It's so much better than Windows its not even slightly funny. Plus an OS X license is a hell of a lot cheaper than a Vista / Windows 7 license.

Here's the specs I'm looking at:

- Intel Core i7 920
- 8GB PC12800 1600 MHz SDRAM
- Western Digital 1TB Hard Drive
- ATI HD 4870 1GB Video Card
- Blu Ray combo drive
- Vista Ultimate 64 bit
- 23" Acer HD monitor

That's it, I'd love to get a new laptop but the specs don't even remotely come close to this. That plus my 4 year old Mac G4 still works so there's no need to replace it.

Sorry, glossy just isn't acceptable for photo and movie editing (unless there is an add-on to take care of it, dunno if there is). With the previous gen Studio display this was not a problem. BTW, mine is a 1st gen revision C MBP with a matte screen and I use a dell 2407-wfp hc which is about as much as I could have afforded and allows quality work to be done. The dell display can also be used vertically, a huge help with posters.

16. The 2009 iMacs don't appear (that I can see so far) to have the glossy screen...

The panel is protected by glass, but I can only see reflection and distortion around the black border... (of course, the pictured iMac is a 2008 or earlier model; mine is a 2009 model)

17. That's the combo I have (well, a couple years older but still)! Plus the Wacom tablet. I LOVE it.

I work at home now and can't imagine any other set-up that would work as well for me. The funny part is I have very similar photos from Lake Tahoe to the one on the monitor in the photo above.
