Painting Question...We got a house w Latex over Oil and it's peeling...What is the Best Sollution?
Is there an easy way to prep such a surface (trim) so that we can paint over it?

I have found conflicting advice and would appreciate what DUers have to say.

One bit of advice was "Peel Stop - Shallac based primer" then latex paint.

Thanks!

1. any good primer will prep it after scraping the loose. but the Shellac is prolly best
maybe less scraping is necessary with that particular primer, as it will just sort of glue everything together. Then you'll have a good base for whatever color/type of paint going over it.

But, if you want a smooth surface, you have to scrape/grind/sand off virtually all of the paint layer that is peeling. This makes for a much more expensive paint job.

3. Yep. Scrape it off. Sand the surfaces, prime, paint using GOOD paint.
The previous guys tried the easy way and you see what you got....

4. Yep, we bought a fixer-upper with incredibly bad paint jobs throughout the house
I am sadly well-versed in the above process.

5. I did that, too -- sand and reprime and paint
It's a major pain in the ass.

6. Burn it down
and rebuild... :P

Extreme I know, but then you get exactly what you want... :P

FYI, I am kidding, do not burn down your house.

7. First, do a lead test.
You can find a swab test kit in any hardware store.

I've used peel stop, it works quite well as a primer. See the guys at the Lowe's paint counter (GREAT colors sold under valspar) because I think you can get Peel Stop or something like it added to the primer (this might save you a step.)

8. Go with it. Do a mediterranean wash over the peeling paint. Take a hammer
and add some cracks to your wall. That way it will feel like you are living in the Greek Isles.

9. Please tell me you didn't paint over oil with latex.
You need a special product to do that or your house will peel forever. If it's peeling? No way around scraping and sanding.
