When did 5lb bags of sugar turn into 4lb bags?

I don't normally use sugar for anything, never keep it in the house, over 20+ years now. I now have a room mate that does use sugar and she bought a bag of it the other day. I was just moving it and noticed it was a 4lb bag... Didn't they used to be 5lb bags? When did this change?

2. It's not just sugar, it's a great many products across the grocery board.

It's a way for the manufacturers to make you less aware of the fact that their prices have increased, especially in a bad economy when more people are careful with their grocery budget.

3. Sometime after 1 pound coffee cans started holding 13 oz. and then 11 oz.

I guess they figure that most people won't notice the difference in weight so they don't realize that they are paying the same amount for less of the product.

12. And apparently they're right because the manufacturers keep pulling this crap.

Look at old Betty Crocker type cookbooks from the 1960s and 1970s and you'll ingredient lists calling for can sizes that just don't exist on the product shelves anymore -- 1 lb cans of tomatoes, for example.

About the only way to get a 1 lb. package of coffee these days is haved it packed for you at a coffee shop.

4. They've done that with almost everything.

They made the packages slightly smaller, but they don't really look or feel smaller. You won't notice the change unless you look at the weight on the box. Of course, when the packages got smaller, the prices remained the same. :mad:

8. About the time a half gallon tub of icecream began its move toward 11.5 oz.

They keep the containers about the same size but put less in and only slightly increase the price at the same time.

I am responsible for buying the sugar in my house (my wife doesn't eat it) and I always make sure to get 5 lb bags. You just have to get the supermarket brand.

15. Yes - there are both 4-lb and 5-lb bags at the store where I shop.

It used to be 16oz per box, now it's 14oz. x(

16. That one is particularly annoying to me.

Some brands still come in 1 pound bags/boxes, some come in 12 oz. bags, and for some brands some shapes come 12 oz, and others are 16 oz.
