1. I honestly don't get it. I guess I'm officially a member of an older fuddy duddy generation.
I guess I value learning for it's own sake so I've never seen any purpose in cheating.

3. Agreed! Last semester I had a student turn in a paper
Edited on Mon Apr-27-09 03:42 PM by kiva
(online class) that she got from one of those 'free essay' sites. When I contacted her--after giving her a zero for the assignment--she tried to tell me that she had NEVER been to any of those sites, and she had written the paper. Maybe, she suggested, she had posted it online and someone had taken it and submitted it to the essay site. Right. I'm not hardnosed about grades, and had she put forth any effort in doing her own work, she'd have passed the class.

Edited for grammar oops.

5. Okay, I give up. How do you cheat when it's
"open notebook?" Did they steal the answers or something?

9. like I said below...
if you really want to know, message me. otherwise it's too much info about a very specific situation. Don't want to ruin anyone's college career.

8. not quite
if you're curious, I'll tell you in mail. Putting the details of the situation on the web, beyond these generals I've already mentioned, seems like I'm compromising the privacy of the students in question.

6. i've caught a few
when i was teaching in grad school.

once two students turned in the same paper. :eyes:

once a student answered a question correctly but the work was shown funny and not correctly and she used "K=" in her answer when everyone used "X=" (which is fine, but...). I looked at the answer of the student sitting next to her, "X=" but it looked like a "K".

oh well, another day at the office.
