1. Checking the hell in. Our club now has two members.
I read that Facebook collects and sells all sorts of data, I've got not use for that, no time either.

It reminds me of instant messaging, after a week of using that I couldn't get rid of it fast enough.

Now I use texting and my iPhone extensively, I don't need to fucking Twitter or Facebook.

:hi:

8. I'm in two, actually.
I have a MySpace page, assuming that there's no expiration after not logging in for a while. I do nothing with it, but it's there. My girlfriend is on Facebook, though, and the shit I see there (passing each other virtual drinks, virtual stuffed animals, etc) just makes me want to throw up.

The thing I really don't get about Twitter is that Facebook has the same function. What's the point of both?

17. What's the difference?
(That was a serious question, not a facetious or snotty one)

If you post what's on your mind on FB, all of your friends can see it, so isn't that the same thing as tweeting? "So and so is ready for the weekend!" "This asshole just finished a sausage breakfast!" and so on? If not, how is tweeting different?

43. I have no idea, but I do like the verb, "tweet"!
I think your question was answered downthread, that it's like texting a bunch of people at once.

I spend enough time checking three email accounts and any texts on my iphone, I just don't need one more thing.

Unless it made my life or my job easier, that is.

74. A lot of the facebook apps are stupid
Edited on Sun May-03-09 12:43 AM by fujiyama
but I've found facebook to be a great way to get in touch with old friends and keep in touch with folks too.

I find it convenient because it's basically a communications tool to efficiently broadcast info to a bunch of friends at once. For example, I was staying in SF and another friend was heading there for a week. I found out because she noted that in facebook and we met up for some drinks when she was there. Another friend found me on facebook and I'm likely going to meet him for lunch tomorrow. I think the last time I saw him was back in middle school!

But beyond sharing info and occasionally photos, some of the stuff is sort of silly.

10. From my limited understanding of Facebook, one of its functions is
a "what's on your mind" thing that serves the same function as the only one Twitter offers. It's like buying a movie on DVD and then b uying a VHS backup, if I'm getting this correctly.

26. Twitter is for very short blog posts which can be done from a mobile phone or computer
You can set it up so that you get updates via text when people do a new post (aka "tweet.")

I can set this up for you, because I understand that it's hard to adapt to new things when you are teh old.

39. I just use it for shit I don't want to have to retell ten people.
My huge Twitter entourage consists of nine friends and my mother. :eyes:

It's also cool for general shit like "hey, this link is awesome, you should take a look" "look at this picture" or "event X is canceled, don't bother driving out" or whatever so you don't have to call, email, whoever is participating, you can just send a short announcement from your phone.

You should look into doing one for notifying people of activist shit, that makes way more sense than announcing that one of your dogs had a room clearing fart or that I sent you yummy cookies.

28. You are one of the lucky ones.
My girlfriend has both and I've had to seriously press her about keeping me out of her updates. If I wanted people to know what movie I was watching or what sort of beer I was drinking, I'd inform the people myself.

The worst fight we ever had was when I learned that she was tweeting about me for two weeks before a friend of mine clued me in on what she was posting. The fight was long and loud, with me doing most of the ranting and her doing a lot of crying, but the upside is that she knows she was wrong and was actually sorry, so she no longer presses me to join. FB and Twitter are forbidden subjects in my house.

And my cell phone is a throw away, like the drug dealers use!! No pesky contracts for me!

I use it for dire emergencies at home (a dire emergency could be "I'm at the store, do we need butt wipe?" but it could also be a "Bring the jumper cables--the battery is dead,"--you get the idea) and to stay in contact when I am away from home ("Hello, I'm in Such-n-such hellhole, here's the number of the hotel").

If I'm not on the road, the thing is turned off. You can't reach me on it, by and large!

48. facebook was an immediate turn off for me because having
more than one account violates their policy. Personally, I think that's awfully short sighted - if I were free to have a personal page and the ability to also have a completely separate professional, hobbyist, etc. page I might have bothered with it. I've never had a myspace or facebook page. I did create a twitter account which I've never used, simply because I assumed my teenage daughter might end up using it and since we live in different states I have to communicate by whatever means she uses most - if I don't, we don't have enough contact. I HATE texting, but it's what she uses so I used it ad nauseum.

I don't get twitter and I have few friends since I work alone and live far from family/past friends, so even though I've created the account I've never used it and probably never will - unless my daughter does. : )

60. Can't be bothered. I'm a militant luddite.
I have yet to even see a Facebook page. I tried once for some reason and IIRC I had to set up my own page before viewing any others. Something like that, hoops to jump through. Whatever, it looked like a hassle I wasn't in the mood for and haven't bothered since. I don't know if it's anything like MySpace, but if it is, I know I won't like it. All I remember from viewing MySpace pages are: Obtrusive, annoying as hell, suck-ass music. S-L-O-W page loading, and when it finally does load it's usually a garish and tacky mess.

Twitter just seems insane to me. That, and the now totally ubiquitous cell phone, make me wonder what the fuck it is with this seemingly, to me anyway, pathological obsession to be in constant communication with anyone and everyone other than the one's we're with.

69. I broke down and started Facebooking about a month or so ago.
A couple of high school friends told me I needed to get on there. I resisted for a long time. I finally broke down. It's mildly amusing. The irony is the two friends who urged me to sign up hardly ever post anything.

I've re-established some friendships that sort of drifted away, mostly as a result of my moving around a great deal.

I don't understand Twitter at all.

71. I have none and if any one where to try to "twitter-twatter" me...
they better take me to dinner first. The AB don't roll like that.

72. I absolutely refuse to tweet, but do have...
a Facebook account somewhere. I set it up a while ago and forgot about it.

And I don't IM, blackberries are for putting on cereal and making jam, and "texting" sounds like an obscene act.

75. You are not alone. I am alone.
I have a MySpace account, which I started as a distraction when I burned out on activism...Alas, there were all the activist groups and anarchists....so there I was at the computer, not on the streets...and now I don't use it at all....it sucks.
Hence, no Facebook, no Twitter...it's all a big clusterfuck to me.
I don't care. All my friends are four years old anyway.
Gee, I'm in a bitchy mood tonight...x(

:hi:

peace~

82. No MySpace, no Facebook, no Twitter.
I have a cell phone that's about 8 years old and I don't use it often at all. I also do not have caller ID or voicemail on it. I keep it for emergencies and to make long distance calls home. That is it.

83. I don't do facebook or twitter
My Uncle had a horror story with facebook. All these people from his past contacted him. I don't want to have anything to do with the people from my past.

As for twitter,if what your doing warrants a post, then you can email, text,IM me,why dedicate a website of your daily activities?

84. I have neither. I'm not knocking either one, but, truth be told,
there are not that many people from my past that I care to reconnect with! I also lost my photobucket password, and I have no way to upload photos using my laptop.

So, hiya!! :hi: Love your sig pic, btw.

If my MySpace account still exists, the sigpic is my background there.

As for Photobucket: I lost my password too, I just created a new account.

86. No My Space, No Facebook, No Twitter,
No cellphone. No Blog.

Still have dialup.

It's bad enough having to check the answering machine and e-mail everyday.

Nor do I feel the need to open an account in any of them. In fact, just the name "Twitter" annoys the hell out of me.

93. Nope, neither
I already burnt out on my high school graduating class through a Yahoo group that came and went. Mostly the people from my past that I want in my life are still there to some degree.

As for the "Twitter" thing, it seems completely inane. The terminology annoys me- "tweeting", "followers", and I don't give a shit that someone I know just took one.

I barely have time for DU. I've been urged by several friends I know to join, but seriously, I don't have the time to further divide.
