The swine flu ate my daughter's dance recital dress rehearsal.
Now it's getting personal.

1. I'm reminded of the weeks following 9-11...
when the elementary school field trip to the pumpkin patch was canceled due to the imminent threat of terrorist attack.

3. Hehe. Well, to be fair, there have been cases around here.
No politician or official wants to go down in history as the Doubting Thomas who caused the the Great Pandemic of 2009.

7. If the swine flu ever canceled a dress rehearsal of mine, I'd have a nervous breakdown.
Luckily, today was the last thing I did at work that required a dress rehearsal.

8. Can you ever remember anything like this where people had to stay home?
that's pretty wild.

It's odd to see all those face masks on the news- apparently those really have no effect.

9. I've seen school and events cancelled for illness before, but...
this is a bit unusual, since it's mostly for the possibility of an illness.

It's an odd situation, though. If there is no major outbreak, do we say "Wow, what a collosal overreaction" or "Wow, good thing we kept it from spreading?" No one wants to be the person who ordered the gates removed to let the big wooden horsey into the city.

10. doesn't it seem like people react so quickly to everything now due to the
speed of the media response?

Personally, I think our culture (or is it media) has become highly reactive. It's bizarre.

big wooden horsey! :D good one.

11. But they don't stay home.
They closed one of the high schools around here and then the news interviewed people from the school out at the mall.

Sort of defeats the purpose of closing schools if people are still going out where there are crowds anyway, at least if the purpose is to stop transmissions.
