Friday Night Picture Thread - Transportation Edition
Post a pic of you or a family member and some kind of transportation. Or just your favorite kind of transportation if you don't have one with you in it.

Here's my grandson riding in "Papa's race car".:)

14. Yup
It's the same as the old homestead, too — see another vintage ride, flash the driver a 'V', he gives one back. I freakin' love that. :D

I wanna get a bike, though, as like 90 percent of my trips to the store 'n' whatnot, so far, are four blocks or less.

31. Awesome! We had these guys come through last week.
Union Pacific's No. 844 steam engine rolled into the Bay Area last week. Crowds gathered between Pleasanton and Sunol, where No. 844 met two other steam engines. No. 2472 is a Pacific Class engine owned by the Golden Gate Railroad Museum and Tanker No. 3 belongs to the Pacific Locomotive Association, which operates trains out of Sunol. The No. 844 was UP's last new steam engine, built in 1944.

74. I was supposed to meet my date for a romantic weekend in DC. He canceled a few days before
the trip (this was Dec. 2000). I informed him - okay - but he was paying for my trip as I intended to take it anyway. I had a blast, made friends, did things I might not have normally thought of, like ask a bus driver if he would let me pretend to drive his bus (while parked) and take my picture, too (bad as it is). He was a sweetie. I had a blast that long weekend. I'm so glad I didn't fall apart, mope around and cry.

Not sure if this counts, but it was all I could think of... : )

101. Well, the bus didn't move - but even so, it was a blast.
As were the other things I did (within reason and without compromising my own safety, of course - zany as they may have been).

What I'd really like to drive is a plane. A jet. Like a 737. I don't want to fly it - that's way beyond me. I just want to drive it around the runway - or park it at the gate or something. I'm sure it's more difficult than I imagine but I'm thrilled by the idea anyway. Man, I would love to do that... I love planes and I love flying.

I'd be a lousy pilot, but it'd be a blast to just drive one of those awesome birds a few hundred yards or so. (I know - dream on, dream on...).

Somehow I think my chances of actually being able to do such a thing are pretty slight. : )

(sigh...)

79. I've always been intrigued by amphibious vehicles.
Especially serious hardware like that. Cool rig.

96. It was a blast. Most passengers saw their lunch twice, but none of our guys
It's got to be mostly mental. Once you're committed to driving these things, I guess you just have an immunity to sea-sickness. Just about the time the grunts would start puking, I'd bust out an MRE and start eating, just to fuck with them. There's nothing like an Omelet with Ham with the smell of diesel and vomit and about 120 decibels of a 900 cubic inch turbo-diesel engine. We would be nice and pass out plastic bags beforehand, nobody would ever take them, so they'd have to puke in their helmets if we couldn't get them one in time. Puking on the floor was a huge no-no, because it would foul the bilge pumps and possibly sink us. :) The Australian Marines we trained with at one point were a different breed, they loved throwing up in their helmets, and took pictures of it.

and don't get me started on night-ops, heheheh in the back it was nothing but :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: 20 foot swells in total darkness while driving back to the ship, good times!

No continental shelf, so we got the worst of it. I only kept my helmet after it was knocked off by a wave 3 feet over my head because the comm cable was strong enough to keep it attached to our comm gear. Needless to say, our electronics required a lot of maintenance. Salt water and all that.

However, we could use those swells to our advantage, and literally surf our tanks to the beach. Catch a wave, idle the throttle, ride that sucker home then kick in the tracks just before hitting ground. It was going out that was a bitch :D

99. almost didn't. Damn well-made car. Designed so that the engine
wouldn't crush the driver/passenger. Hit a tree at 45 mph. The engine was obliterated but you can see that the "smushing" stops, almost dramatically, at the dash line (sort of - I don't know the formal words to use). They had to pry my passenger out. He seemed to be more seriously injured but I was the one who almost died from internal injuries/massive bleeding. Even so, we were still incredibly lucky to have been in that car for that kind of impact. I had no time to brake or decelerate.

Had we suffered the same impact in a different car, I likely wouldn't be sitting here writing about it. The design of that engine brace - in particular (or whatever) that kept the engine from ramming into interior is what saved our lives. Even the doctors were amazed. They kept asking what kind of car I was driving.

I'd rather have my old '92 Volvo than just about anything else - even if I could afford any car I wanted. Drove like a truck and I loved every bit of it. All teenagers should run around in old Volvo's. : )

Thanks for the hug.. : ).

on side mirrors for her Volvo station wagon. In the time I've known her (and her parking skills), she has replaced both side mirrors twice, and we've lost count of the number of new brake lights and headlights she's replaced on that boat car.

100. oh yah... in the desert - at sunset - no fences, no boundaries... just take off
and run. All could do was hang on and enjoy, going so fast I couldn't see because of the tears in my eyes from the wind... He'd stop after awhile. Had I been a better rider I might have had more say over the whole situation. : )

Man I miss that.

Good call.
