Does your state have tornado sirens?
Not sure about central and western PA, but here in SE PA, we do not. I do hear nuclear plant test sirens once a month.

1. Yes, and they test them the first Monday of each month.
One is near my house. But, when the storms are so bad, sometimes it isn't loud enough. I hear it plain as day when they are testing though. I do live in an area where tornadoes get crazy though, so we have to have them.

2. Do you see tornadoes? If you do, are there sirens going off?
If there aren't any tornadoes, how do you know whether or not you have sirens?

I live here and have never heard them talked about. And there have been tornadoes nearby.

5. not here in northern colorado
but i'm sure there are out on the eastern plains. we're so close to the mountains that there's a really low risk of tornadoes.

6. No, but does yours have tsunami sirens?
Edited on Fri May-01-09 06:23 PM by KamaAina
We hear these precisely once per month. If a tsunami should strike precisely at 11:45 AM on the first Monday of the month, we will be well and truly screwn, because everyone will assume it's the regular monthly test.

edit: spelling

7. I guess that is the magic date to test because that is when they
test our tornado sirens.

12. Y'all may not have them if there aren't a lot of tornadoes in that area.
I guess it is a must here. We have tornado season and it gets crazy. Tornadoes seem to love my neighborhood too.

13. They tested here today
I think that tornado sirens are a local responsibility. They might not have them in your town, but maybe they have them in other towns. Location is also key. A large town with only one siren might leave some areas in town not within hearing distance of the siren. Our local siren is 3 blocks away so we always hear it.

15. Do you think it may also matter if you live in a "tornado zone"?
Edited on Fri May-01-09 08:10 PM by Shell Beau
I never thought of other towns NOT having them, but if tornadoes are a rare occurrence, then it may not be necessary. Although, maybe that makes them more necessary.
