Turn the Fucking car alarm OFF
Or I'm going to do it the hard way. Recently there has been a car near my building that has a totally obnoxious car alarm that goes off every day or two and scares the crap out of my cats! Today it's gone on and off at least 10 times in the last hour! My cats came running to me with a make it stop look...now they are hiding..outside of a baseball bat, what can I do if this continues?! :grr:

1. Call the cops every time,so that there is a record.
Eventually the owner can be charged with a noise violation. At least that is what the cops told me when I had the same problem.

3. Ear plugs?
I hate those alarms, too. Good in theory, but some of them are so sensitive that a truck driving by sets them off. Of course those are the ones with the shrillist, loudest alarms, too...

4. someone cross the street went away one weekend and his went off for 2 days
i think it conserved battery by turning off every so often.

those aftermarket ones are the worst. if i didn't have windows put in by the airport, it probably would've bothered me more.

here the police will cite a vehicle is the car alarm is a nuisance and i've seen them tow one if it's really bad, but i'm not in S.F. you're probably lucky you aren't in D.C. proper, if it's anything like S.F. where the police don't even come out if your car is stolen :wtf:.

6. LOL! I may need to do a rant on car alarms!
Yesterday, while weeding the garden, one somewhere in the neighborhood went off for like 10 minutes. After a few minutes, I said to my wife that while MOST people ignore car alarms, I should actually call the police so they can come ARREST THE ASSHOLE who was letting it go on. A few minutes later, I inquired as to the whereabouts of my axe and threatened to disable it myself and take along a fresh can of WHOOP-ASS for the owner!

9. A quick google search could turn up everything you need to take care of it.
... I can't tell you what to search for without potential legal trouble so just do a search on 'owhay otay akemay away arbombcay' and see what pops up.

10. Gather 5-6 neighbors, flip over offending car, smash bottom with sledgehammer until noise stops.
That's how we did it in my old neighborhood.

11. My next door neighbor's car was doing that for a period of like 3 months.
One night it went off every ten minutes starting at like 3 AM. Cops were called every time.

Douchebag neighbor has since replaced it (it was a 2000ish big three Sedan...nothing fancy, and certainly nothing worth putting an alarm on). He replaced it with a brand new "midlife crisis" overcompensating for his small penis car.

12. Movie Scene: groups of kids on skateboard ride through parking lot, slapping cars
And setting off dozens of car alarms. I don't remember what movies that was in, but that scene cracked me up. The chaos of a whole lot of car alarms going off at once was priceless.

14. Yep! Beverly Hills Cop
:D

How about Michael Moore's TV Nation bit with the car alarm CEO?

Payback Night
Throughout the show, TV Nation asks people on the street to name some things that really get on their nerves. Car alarms that go off at 6 a.m.? No problem, TV Nation visits the CEO of a major car alarm company and sets off 10 car alarms at 6 a.m. Other paybacks include blasting Muzak outside the home of the head of Muzak and lifting and dropping a garbage dumpster outside the home of a garbage company owner.

17. I'd go with police
If you tried to go through the condo association, you could get the plate number and if it's the same car over and over they might be able to do something but that would probably take forever. And probably all they can do is write a 'please stop' letter. Police could probably do something much faster (noise violation mentioned above), and the owner might not know it's their car.

One of my coworkers had a malfunctioning alarm that would go off spontaneously, including the middle of the night, although they knew about it and had to take it in about 3 times to finally get it fixed.

18. Those only deter the amateurs anyway
A pro can disable one in nothing flat. Just like home burglar alarms, a pro can be in and out before the cops show.

19. Here's a whole year's experience with that (& why some suggestons above won't work)
Renters moved in 2 houses away on the corner of a busy through street. Couple in their late 20s or early 30s. Car for them, pick-up for him. The truck was older but well kept up, not exactly a "Classic" type. It had a SOUND ACTIVATED alarm, would go off any time a loud motorcycle or other loud roar happened, thunder, whatever. This was happening at ALL hours, whether 2 A.M. or 2 P.M. The truck was always parked in the carport, whether they were there or not. They wouldn't turn it off, would let it run its full 45 second course each time.

Remember they were on the corner of a busy street, and one neighbor suspected they were selling drugs, because they would stand outside in the front yard from 11 P.M. to 5 A.M., just talking and talking with drop by "friends".

The neighbors didn't want to get involved from fear of the drug angle. The neighbor in the house between mine and them must have been bothered far more than I was because she shared the double driveway with them and their carport was right next to her windows. And *I* was SEVERELY bothered.

After a few months I started keeping a log of EVERY time it went off and what set it off. A couple of months later I started calling the coppers. Of the half dozen or so times I called the cops, a couple were friendly/responsive, another couple were on the TRUCK ALARM side, and the others couldn't see a problem.

Even the responsive ones said they couldn't do much, that I should keep on with the log and maybe someday, after enough calls, some cop later on would file charges.

But here's the kicker: The cops' consensus was that the alarm was a REASONABLE precaution against vehicle theft and shouldn't be objected to by others. They said the NOISE regulations regard loud parties and music but NOT car alarms, that there was NO regulation SPECIFICALLY against car alarms. It took me a little while to figure out they were being LITERAL, that this issue has nothing to do with loud music or safety, that it is simply about DISTURBING THE PEACE!1

Eventually, near the end of the year, I myself PRESSED CHARGES with the Municipal Court. But it turned out that apparently they were leasing by the year or something and they moved out almost exactly a year to the day.

This thing is SO multi-faceted: The renters were VERY NICE to the cops. Plus, the cops are incredibly YOUNG and would tend to IDENTIFY with the perpetrators because the perps were their own age, liked loud noises like sirens. When the cops would first come to take my complaint they were friendly, seemed to be on my side. After they talked to the perps, they would come back and were clearly on the perps' side. One of them actually giggled, then told me he had just come from another ELDERLY complainant's place, suggesting that us geezers were just cranky.

Anyway, they finally moved. I never dropped the charges and have never heard back from the court. Perhaps it will stay there like an old ticket.
