Okay...ohhhhhkay...am I the only one who hadn't heard of Diane Krall before last weekend?
Let's Fall in Love

Last weekend I went browsing at my local Borders and found a CD that I thought I might like. Now, normally I don't buy CDs unless I know something about the artist(s), but when I examined the list of tunes I saw "Let's Fall in Love." Forty years ago I bought an LP of Mulligan/Getz (on the Verve label) and was blown away by their (purely instrumental) version of "Let's..." so I thought I'd take a chance and see what this singer named Krall did with the Cole Porter standard. I got home and just loved her version!

So last week I asked a couple of my colleagues at work if they had ever heard of a singer named "Diane Krall." Well, they all looked at me like I just crawled out from under a rock:

:D Have you heard of a singer named "Diane Krall?"
:wow: Are you kidding us?
:o Uh, no...
:eyes: She's very popular around the world.
Nice interpreter of classic jazz standards.
She sells out the Hollywood Bowl!}(}(}(}(}( ...(what a doofus!)
x( ...oh.

So am I the only one who didn't know who she was until last weekend?

I have every single CD of hers, and most of her vinyl as well...

I LOVE her, I want to marry her, and am hatching my evil plan to steal her away from Elvis Costello right now...

edit: oh, and it is Diana, not Diane.

DianA, what do you haunt me so?

I used to be thought of as "hep" and "cool." Now I'm thought of as a real "L 7", a shell of my former self...

3. I just discovered her about a year or two ago - LOVE her music!
She's fucking fantastic. Real old school kind of singer, in the sense that she actually knows how to sing.

Brilliant!

5. "Real old school kind of singer"
Although she has her own style, I heard a little Julie London and Natalie Cole, both of whom I have CDs of.

I put her on at the outset of martini hour...

10. Plenty of offensive musicians
are complete and utter, indescribable shit.

So what? Does music have to be offensive to be good?

11. Huh?
No, good music is never offensive.
Krall is just sort of...meh. Kenny G with nice legs. I've always thought of her as the jazz painist/singer in a Clint Eastwood movie or somethng.
However, I'm not surprised that the middle class audience goes apeshit for the white blonde chick.

17. Man, I don't begrudge your wanting to fuck her...
(I myself wouldn't mind doing so), but that doesn't make her a genius.
And surely you are not going to deny that her physical appearance is a large factor in her promotion? That would be rather...disingenuous.
Technically, her chops are good, but there are lots of good players out there.

Krall is vanilla, safe, predictable.

Wilson goes everywhere and makes it all brand new.

Also, the fact that I know a handful of local female singers that I've played with and would rather listen to over Ms. Krall given the choice, tends to reinforce my perception of her success as the result of savvy marketing.

23. The one album of hers
that I really, really like is "The Girl In The Other Room."

Not one old favorite among the songs. All very personal bits, including one or two by Elvis Costello. It's about the death of her mother and finding love late in life.

A really great piece of work.................

29. Heard her for the first time on David Letterman...
about a month ago. I'd seen and heard her name, but never bothered to check her out until her Letterman appearance. She does pretty stuff. You have to be in the mood to listen to her (imho). I agree with someone else who said she's vanilla..... I checked out a few of her videos on YouTube.

Love her versions of "Fly Me to the Moon" and "Look of Love"...

best,
