6. Maybe, maybe not.
Which race is longer? If the Preakness were a bit longer, Mine that Bird would have won. QUITE A RACE!

8. At least she should have had a chance to try.
She was out in the front, giving the boys a good run.

21. I believe the Preakness is longer.
The Belmont Stakes, next up and the third in the triple crown, is the longest.

3. I usually get irritated with an owner for selling a horse
After a big race but not this year .She would not have run otherwise. Nice nice horse.

4. We had a house full of people jumping up and down yelling for her to go, go.
She would have done better on a dry track.

She would have left the boys behind in the dust.

It was great to watch the race on a big screen tv.

20. thanks, those are great reads
aw yes Eight Belles - is it me or is there something just more regal and dignified in the fillies? I never watched horse racing again after seeing Ruffian break down live on TV - it broke my heart

11. Why didn't they give her a shot at the Derby?
...and will they run her at the 1.5 mile Belmont?

If "Mine That Bird" wins the Belmont, the powers that be in racing will tear their hair out over today.

14. she ran in the Kentucky Oats the day before the Derby (all filly race) and won
by about 20 lengths. The owners wouldn't have run her two days in a row, but not sure why they chose the Oats over the Derby, because they already knew how good she was.

Mine That Bird coming in second today sets up a HUGE amount of interest for the Belmont, especially if they both run in it...

Interesting that the two best horses this season are a filly and a gelding... :)

22. I bet against her.
I thought the outside post and a track bias for closers was going to hurt her, but she put in a brilliant performance. So, the filly came in first, and the gelding second. Maybe I shouldn't bet on anything with testicles.
