Save the life of your pet OR save the life of a person who has no family
Since many of the responses to the other question use the rationale that the person has a multitude of other people who would be affected by the death, does it change the situation if the person has no family or friends? Not even a job.

So, your beloved pet vs. a completely unattached person (I mean, not even any friends--just hypothetically of course - so please don't argue the premise.

1. Well, single people with no children seem to be considered pretty expendable by many
Doesn't seem like a stretch that that factor might change someone's mind.

Won't change mine, though. I'm still going for the kitty. :)

2. I'll bet if you made it a seriously disabled person that would change
the situation a lot too. A person like me. I can't work, so I'm not a productive member of society.

I bet some people would see the nearly paraplegic person in an electric wheelchair and immediately choose the pet to save. It would be interesting to know the percentage of people.
