but I think it's part of the "plan". A body might defend themselves by being current with new science and culture, and paying attention without derision to what's now going on in the world.

I've been thinking about that a lot lately. If your kids don't respect you it is... hard. Disheartening. Painful. Lonely. But sometimes it's a phase, and sometimes you need to get current. Your kids don't understand what lies ahead and they have high expectations. I think it's an interesting challenge to fulfill some of those expectations and as for the rest, make it v. clear why it isn't important.
