Look at the movies Melanie Griffith turned down!
Griffith reportedly turned down many parts in some popular movies, including the role of Iris in Taxi Driver, the lead role in Carrie, Princess Leia in Star Wars, Emmeline in The Blue Lagoon and Sarah Connor in The Terminator.

4. it happens
despite their success, you should see the roles folks like Nick Nolte and Harrison Ford have refused (especially later in their careers)

5. I can't believe her in any of those roles.
However, I first saw her in The Harrad Experiment, she was great! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070157/plotsummary

6. Actually, I could see her as Iris in "Taxi Driver"...
she did have that...uh...uh...trashy sensuality (not that there's anything wrong with that) which would have served the role well. Don't think she could have pulled off 12, although I always assumed that Iris was actually a couple of years older than that and said she was 12 merely to appeal to her customers. She had a different quality than Foster(who was great in the role), but she could have done it.
