I've broken my baby toe and it hurt. No doubt the big toe hurts even worse.

4. I did that once: it swelled to about three times normal size and was excruciatingly painful
It turned all shades of awful, and after it was immobilized I had to keep it elevated for days

Then it continued to twinge for about a decade

I could tell you how to build an X-ray tube and fluoroscope so you could irradiate yourself and see whether you thought it was actually broken, but maybe a trip to the doc is in order if icing and elevation doesn't solve the problem pronto

I had to have pins put in the smallest toe once and the pain was awful. The big toe must be so much worse. :(
