On VH1 Classics last night, they showed a look back at Genesis, and how they changed over the years.

When they had Peter Gabriel as frontman? They SUCKED!
Peter Gabriel did far better, once he went out on his own.

Genesis did great with Phil Collins as frontman.
Not just drums.

4. You dont' get it

Music technology was very different circa 1973. Also, Genesis (unlike its peers Emerson, Lake and Palmer and Genesis) did not have big budgets for multiple guitars and keyboards, and therefore had to use the same instruments for each number, requiring tuning and sometimes even rewiring so that each song cold be played as close to the original recorded version as possible. Not to mention the often underpowered PA, which made it difficult for the audience to understand Gabriel's lyrics. Early Genesis music was also complex, and not easy for young men in their early 20s to play live-- therefore, they sat down as they played. Not very visually entertaining, to say the least.

Gabriel developed the masks and costumes and his entire frontman persona in order to entertain a crowd which was used to the bombast of other prog-rock bands with much larger budgets (but arguably weaker material-- ELP, I'm looking at you). They did what they could with what they had, which was not much. The band didn't even begin to break even until after 1975's "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway".

Genesis were an original, unique and brilliant band when Gabriel and Hackett were with them. They slowly lost that charm as the progressed toward arena rock whoredom in the 1980s and became nothing more than a bombastic Foreigner.

I prefer the older stuff, but I think Steve Hackett was a bigger factor than Gabriel.

Seems to be the minority opinion around here, but I totally agree. (One thing I've learned about the Lounge: its musical taste is ... questionable. ;) But to each their own, of course.)
